so which is better a balloon loop or wye or a round house. to reverse direction.
Both have been used but from what i read the round house is becoming obsolete because engines can go forward or reverse with no change of speed.
Seems to reverse my engines the former would be easier except for reversing polarity and cheaper but just not as cool looking

| The BNSF still has a roundhouse--with a reverse loop around it--can't find the pics but I'm sure they're out there...

i saw that on your layout SCVR66 which is what prompted the question. I can see that a loco repair shed can also be part of the pic.
I have the room just not sure if i want to get into such a big project
Just today i saw a roundtable for sale at the second hand store

The turntable roundhouse has long been a dream of mine, I got the turntable back in august on my old layout and used it fairly little. I got the roundhouse kit during the 2 month time period when I didnt have a layout and built it. I love the turntable being majorit of my SCVR locoss are smaller more medium sized ones so they fit the table sos my excursion trains can turn around for the return trip but I do make all my steamers with lights run tender first.

I myself, would use a Roundhouse.... CSX still uses the one in Cumberland, MD on the old B&O line through the area so.......Which is the section of my train yard being built, north Cumberland which leads right into Sand Patch territory, which is how I'm making the whole thing in the days of steam......
So, I say, use a Roundhouse, as they are a VERY interesting part of railroad history.......

if it was me, I'd cut the table in 3 equal pieces 16 in wide..(if thats a 4X8).butt them end to end...then the point to point layout would be 24 ft long and 16 in deep..(if thats a 4X8).then you could add businesses and a station wherever you wanted...use engines with headlights on both ends so you can run fwd and rev. (like that 0-6-0T in the park)...use a run around switch at each end. You could still add a small turntable in the layout...possibilities are endless...

Wrap that point-to-point layout around a corner and you might be able to squeeze in a wye in the corner.

I remember a layout article in Model Railroader where the guy put a tail track through an exterior wall and encased it in PVC pipe, so even that's possible!

Well, that question would depend on what kind of operations you've got. What's your era, what's you taste? How much space do you have?
If you model a shortline, branchline, or special commuter operation, a turntable might be best for you. Make sure you locomotives could fit on the turntable! A wye could work well if the turntable is too short. I personally don't like loop tracks just for turning a locomotive. If I had a loop, it would be to run the whole train through, to allow semi-continous running.
If you have smaller steam locomotives, or a really broke shortline, you could just not turn the locomotives at all....
It sounds like you want an engine terminal though. If you just want an engine terminal, I'd say a turntable may be good, even if you can't afford a roundhouse (or space for one). A wye could also work, with a station, pocket yard or engine house in the middle.
