This locomotive is a Mantua Mikado chassis with a Cary Light Mikado boiler. It has a can motor and new gear drive. The tender is a short all brass number. I am trying to match what railroad would have this configuration light Mikado. I haven't been able to find anything. It looks like the builder went to a lot of trouble to match it to a specific locomotive. Any help would be welcome on this cool loco.

The pumps make me think Southern Pacific, and the headlight high on the smokebox reminds me of Northern Pacific. Not sure about the tender. Seems awefully small, even for a light mike.

Yeah I'd go with Northern Pacific or SP&S.

I'm not sure what railroad may have added a short tender to a 2-8-2, BUT I do know why they did when it was done........turntable length. Short tenders on bigger engines to fit short tabled, turntables. Being a short tender, one way to find that railroad for that locomotive would be to look to see what railroads kept a 2-8-2 or a fleet of them nearby the yard as that would be another reason for a short tender is yard or transfer work!
