I ran across this engine at the Bunker Hill train show last weekend, I'd seen them on Ebay occasionally, but this is the first one I'd run across in person. Guy wanted $5, so I snapped it up. The cast wheels on front are disintegrating, cracking, so they won't last much longer. The rear power truck frame is broken as well. But the power wheels are different, so they seem to be ok. I can probably swap out the fronts some something not made of that horrible metal that gets impurities and breaks up. Anyway, haven't tried it yet to see if it works, no body came with it, but should be a fun toy to play with.

Cool Fellas.
If replacing the wheels with insulated ones and adding wipers was not too difficult from parts you might have laying around could you power it off the track?

Well, AF, that kinda defeats the purpose of it being battery powered, doesn't it? I was thinking if the power went out at a show, I could use this as a stand-by to keep people entertained until the DCC comes back on. Besides, with 2 C batteries, the motor is probably only 3 volts max, so it wouldn't take track power well, probably cook the windings when I'd forget not to throttle it up all the way. It's rather a crude chassis anyway, so not worth doing a conversion on it. I just thought it was a neat piece because it uses it's own onboard power. I will probably replace the broken truck and zamac axles so it's usable at least. Actually I could leave the broken side plates and just replace the cracking wheel/axles on the front, and see how it operates.

When I was a kid a friend had an HO steamer that ran on 2 C cells in the boiler, but could also run on track power. I always wondered how they achieved that... maybe a power resistor between the motor and the track. I don't know who made it, and I haven't seen one since.
