This will be a continuing thread like Franks "Wat'z goen on!" Just thought I'd share the stuff I have been working on and am working on now, updates ARE on my website but less work if posted here

found an old bell from I believe an old Tyco GP20, cleaned and installed it onto my mantua big six SCVR #14
also cleaned my mantua shifter rebuild projects bell, SCVR #99
fully rebuilt these 2 mantua tenders which are for the locomotives above, #99s on the left and #14s on the right! New paint, fully cleaned wheels, painted trucks, and new fabricated coupler pockets

This is just what I've done this week so far!

Thanks Frank! Yeah I just recently stripped it's paint with Napa Carburetor Cleaner, stuff does wonders! Removed the paint because of paint bubbling on the smokebox I many not repaint it because I like the silver bare metal color, actually both shifters above have metal boilers, #99 just has a plastic cab and #14 (the big six) has a metal cab.

This locomotive, the blue one here. I saw one for sale on craigslist near me, and I'd like to know a little more about it, as I haven't encoutered one in my travels. I know somewhere on here there was a discussion of this locomotive. I'd like to know if the locomotive is the kind of 'rare' or 'special' that would warrant the price this dude's asking for the lot, as I don't really have interest in any of the other stuff.

With all the projects I'd like to start, I'm begining to fear I'm too much an armchair modeler.

I know one of the cars on there was just featured in COTW. $125 might be a bit high but then again the stuff on there is fairly hard to come by. If it runs well, depends on if YOU want to pay that much. The switcher is a fun one.

it's a 1960 Gilbert Jackshaft Switcher. They are very rare and hard to find! I think I may be the only one on the forum that has one but I don't know for sure. For $125 thats a tad over but I'd buy all that for $100! No Jackshafters are on ebay and haven't been recently. Mine isn't operable and won't be till December hopefully. A friend of mine had one and his had a bend in the rod which caused it to run kinda funky, There was a bend in one of my rods but I have repaired it so it is said to run pretty good once lubed and clean. If you saw the before photos of this loco you'd be amazed at what it looks like now! The one on the ad looks promising! It is complete so I say go for it! If you need any repair tips let me know.

You could also pick up the lot and then sell off everything but the locomotive. Brings the cost down.

my MDC-Roundhouse former 2-8-0 Circus kit now has a freshly repainted boiler! It was black then my friend gave me a great idea to paint it white for a more circus theme. So i used Napa Carburetor cleaner to remove the 2 layers of black paint and get it back to bare metal, primed it, then after letting it sit for 2 hours sprayed white paint on the boiler! I love the results!

here's what she looked like before. I loved the black to but white fits better IMO

freshly painted boiler mounted back on the frame!

cab back on!! Headlight, compressors, and numberboards to go back on later in the week!

Did much work!! I took a spare footboard off my old Spectrum 4-4-0, they gave me 2 and when the engine broke and had to be sent into bachmann I kept ALL the detail parts. The old ones had everything!! So when I got a new one i still had all the detail parts. I took a spare footboard, shortened the bars that hold it up and attached it to my Rivarossi 0-8-0 project! Cheaper then buying a new tender! The old steps were broken off.

Also went to work on my old excursion car projects, made from old AHM gondolas they were started years ago and left in primer and after 2 years its worn but they have been finished the body work at least and they will be primed again and painted black then steps will be built and seats purchased and added!!

So much work!! Since I started my own official repair shop and opened to the public I've been swormed with peoples engines coming! Only half are here and the other have on their way but I've got much work to do!
The first engine I'm working on for a client is a basket case Bachmann 4-4-0 american. Freddie is his name, and he got the engine for free but it's easy to see why, it had no tender, now cow catcher, and left side valve guide. He contacted me asking if I could rebuild it. Ironically i have a basket case Bachmann 4-4-0 lying in piece that I wasn't doing anything so I gladly accepted the challenge. Instead of being paid he's trading me a lightly weather Spectrum Great Northern 44 tonner switcher! So far I've nearly completed the new tender that came off my 4-4-0. Customer wants it all black so easy for me!
Various other projects of mine being worked on too!!

here's the original tender tank!

it was primed and painted! The wood load was cleaned!

tender trucks were painted, wheels and pick up plates cleaned. Motor inside was masked during tender frame paint. Motor lubed, tested, works great! Problems getting the front truck installed is why it's not on. It will be finished tommorow!

the boiler to the engine in the very top photo of this topic is now painted! Nice shiny look on an all metal lokie!

did a custom paint and detailing on my MDC-Roundhouse 0-6-0Ts drivers! Came out great!

painted excursion cars!

Hyde,
Question on your painting, do you use an airbrush, OR is that from a spray can?

With your painting, do you prefer gloss or flat paint?

~John

I use a can of rustolium black paint. Air brushes are too expensive and I don't actively paint year round. Lately I have recently because these are projects I've put off doing. I did get a chance to try an air brush at a train show and they are cool but for $6 I can get a nice can if paint and do a good job. I prime everything before I paint usually. Unless I know right away that it's not needed.

Its always gloss. Flat black looks bad.
