Hello all.

I've been offered a 1994 Mantua set. It's got a Great Northern Big Six locomotive in it, as well as a couple of freight cars. I'm not sure if it has track or power supply. Does anyone know the story is behind this set? Is it actually a Model Power set with the Mantua name? Was it good quality? What a fair price for this set be?

Thanks.

well model power didn't take over till 2001. I'm pretty sure the GN big six was discontinued LONG before model power took over.Themselves in running condition with box i'd say are worth $35. I've seen some sell for $40 and $30 so $35s good, I'm not a set appraiser but if everythings in boxes it'd be worth a decent amount. In fact the next steam locomotive I plan to aquire is a GN big six from my favorite train store! If you don't buy the set you can still s ee pictures of my GN 0-6-0 when i get it in a few weeks
I buy, repair, and collect

Well, here's the set, the "Midwest Freight Hauler" in the 1994 Mantua catalog. Anyone else have this set?

That same set, also was named "Red Ball Express", with the GN, 0-6-0, and 1 less car, in the set. It listed in 1992, for $159.95.

I'd say if its in good shape but has been run its probably worth around $50.00 to $65.00 for the set. With the extra car from my listing, its probably worth that, easy.....

The locomotive alone would be worth $20 to $35....as it listed the same year for on my price list for $124.95 for the locomotive, ONLY.....

IF I were you, I'd see what your friend wants for it and see whats the least amount he/she take for it. With the economy, the lessor, these days the better. BUT, with that said, they too might need the cash as well.

PLEASE take into consideration, this is from a 1992 Mantua catalog, price guide from my days in the hobby shop repairs counter and custom orders and being a Mantua repairs Depot had its advantages back then......
