Hi all.

I have a friend who needs to raise some money so she is selling a storage locker full of her grandfathers (deceased) stuff. While we were going through it we found like 4 packing boxes full of Tyco train stuff. I did a quick count and it looks like there are about 120 different train cars, and about 10 engines. Almost all the cars are in the original (brown and white) boxes. I believe only one of the engines was still in the box. Additionally, there is some track, a control unit, and some accessory pieces like a cattle depot, a barn, a mill, etc. (although some of these did not survive the storage intact.)

My questions are: 1. Is anyone here interested in anything, or should I take it to ebay? 2. There is so much of it I can't list and post pictures individually, so what is the best way to go about it? 3. Should we try to sell the whole thing as a collection or piece them out?

While most of the cars are in their original boxes, these are not mint toys. They have been taken out and used, they were just owned by an adult who stored them in the boxes when he was done. I'm a little out of my element here so I'd appreciate any advice anyone might have.

Thanks.

EDIT: Spreadsheet of Cars I have: http://dl.dropbox.com/u/29854009/Trains.xlsx

I'd piece them out You'd make more money on it than 1 HUGE price
But we like other train manufactures as well Besides Tyco
Such as Life-Like, Bachmann, Hornby, Atlas, Model Power ETC ETC

I collect ad/billboard cars mostly but I like accessories too

If you're looking to get the best dollar, you'll want to piece it out - full lots always bring less on average. If you just want to be rid of it all and not left with the chaff, then a lot is the way to go. The best way would be to break it into a few sub-lots of similar cars... you may get a higher avg. price and be rid of it all quickly.

As for values and such... it is a lot to take pictures of, but a checklist helps. If you post a list of what you have you can gauge interest and / or sell what you can. Ebay fees run upwards of 10% by the time mandatory paypal is added in, and of course listings can take a long time to process. You might have an easier / more profitable time here for starters. So my suggestion would be to get a list of what you have (use the box flaps to help) and go from there...

Thanks everyone. This sounds like good advice. I think when I get home tonight I'll try and put what's there into excel and come back and attach that list to the original post.

In answer to other comments, all the engines look modern, no old time steam locomotives. And there are a few non-Tyco boxes, Life-Like was one I remember for sure and a few in blue and white boxes that were not Tyco I believe.

These things are very cool. Some of the billboard cars are awesome (although I'm not sure where the superhero ones fit in?). I'm tempted to just buy them from my friend, but if I'm honest, the last thing I need is another time/money eating hobby. My friend would definitely agree.

Just list everything, include photos and a price. No photos means no sell or a poor sell. I do like the steam era stuff, steamers, early diesels, and clunkers and parts!

I've put together a list of most of the cars I have. I'm sure a missed a few, and there are no pictures yet (going to have to figure out how to do that) but this should give you an idea what's there.

See if this link works to download the small spreadsheet: http://dl.dropbox.com/u/29854009/Trains.xlsx

I've never tried to link to one of my Dropbox documents, so I hope this works as I intend.

Thanks

The link worked for me - but I already had a dropbox account. That is quite an impressive list of cars.

For anyone who is not able to access the list - if the reason is that you do not have a dropbox account, the good news is that those are free.

OK, after some quick study on the Dropbox website, I think the links should work for non-Dropbox members now. If not, I don't know... PM me and I'll email it to you.

A couple of people have asked for photos. There are over a hundred of these so that's going to take some time. I'll leave these here so hopefully you will understand what I'm up against.
