Every month my favorite train store that my family has been going to for almost 2 decades (The Roundhouse) has a raffle and anytime you make a purchase in-between raffles they give you tickets. All the workers and 2 owners know me very well and they always give me extra tickets. I had bought stuff 3 times since the last raffle and I had a TON of tickets. The prizes are 1st place:$75 2nd place:$50 and 3rd place:$25. They asked me to pull out the ticket and sure enough I drew my own winning ticket!! Ever since I was born and old enough to go there with my mom we had participated in the raffle ocasionally and we NEVER won! One of the owners Allen asked me if I was the one guy who never won. And who would've thought that just 10 minutes later he'd be handing me the 2nd place prize! I already saved $90 to go buy a Rivarossi 4-6-2 and a coach but someone bought the 4-6-2 a few weeks ago Before the raffle started I bought an old bachmann 2-8-2 UP Mikado for $50. Then after I won I quickly walked over to the parts engines they had for sale and picked up the 3 Black Widow Athearn units I saw!! 2 were athearn F7as, 1 dummy, 1 super detailed powered unit, the last one was a 1950s rubber band drive GP9!! The 3 black widow units ended up being $25 all together!! LEaving me with store credit to buy a model power SP harrriman coach and i still have $5 credit left so next time I go i'll look for another engine!! But the sad part was when I got home and tested the 2-8-2 a drive axle cracked... I sealed it up and then it wouldnt move. i called the roundhouse and told them and they told me to bring it next week with the receipt. So i'll exchange it for the mantua 0-6-0 big six because it's the LAST mantua steamer there that was part of a collection of 4 the roundhouse bought from a guy in 2011. Its taken all year but i have 3/4 and i want the 4th! If they give me a deal i'd love to keep the 2-8-2 and repair it but not for the price i paid. Anyways I lubed and cleaned all the black widow units and the powered F7 runs great now!! It and the dummy have all new knuckle couplers! The GP9s drive was missing but i did get the motor running and after lubrication it runs great now! Does anybody have the diagrams to a 50s Rubber band drive Athearn GP9?? I need new belt drives for it! Well that explains my day but I've been having fun working on the black widows!! Enjoy the photos! Any questions? I'll be happy to answer!
here's the bachmann 2-8-2. I'd love to keep it so i'll see if I can get a discount for the damages
here's the 50s/60s Athearn band drive GP9!!
here's the frame assembly of my Athearn GP9!! After some lubrication I got the motor working strong!! I need new bands though.
