Sorry I need to vent and my wife does not understand guys like us, and she is looking at me like i'm crazy. Eariler today I lost an auction because of my funky computer timed out as I was going to bid. What makes it so bad is that it was for a Westerern Pacific GP-20 and it went for $16 and some change. I'm so PISSED!! Thank you for listening.

I feel your pain. I've lost auctions in the last minute like that because something went wrong...it hurts . Don't worry though...there will come another. And who knows...maybe the guy who won for $16 actually bid $400 and he would have won anyway

Not sure if it'd help, but is a railingless, currently not running but entirely intact, Penn Central Tyco GP20 of any use? I like the color, and that's about it. I need coaching on the art of making a tyco not run like a blender... or is that the Nostalga? Don't shoot me guys; remember that Tyco was out of the main stream by the time I was old enough to read!

Use for what? For me any engine is worth restoring or giving another chance. I take great care of high end new locomotives and old engines such as tyco mantua. I actually prefer mantuas over everything! Getting one to run right can be difficult if you dont have experience with it. with the proper tools and knowlidge anything is possible. Tyco power torques, PTs for short are VERY tricky and complex for their size! There are so many people on here who are here to help including me! so i guess i should start off by asking what exactly is wrong with it? Before anything id advise making sure you clean the wheels and lube up it then see if anything proves.

Hey guys, I hope in some ways this makes you feel a little better. The lot I missed and never forgot was the following:

24 Brown Train Pieces: - (that was the entire title and description) What it was was 24 hand crafted Labelle & Walthers fully exterior detailed passenger cars with full interiors. Every car had the works when it came to underbody and exterior detailing. - My internet froze... I about had a stroke for the full minute it took my page to reload. They sold for ~$40 back in 2005.

I did "win" the right to purchase a few lots from that same seller that day however. One included this piece:

/tyco/forum/uploaded/Mustangs_n_Trains/20130424110309_logger.jpg

The logger above was part of 17 steam locos and 14 tenders that were purchased on eBay as a "Lot of 31 Black Train Pieces" for $330 inc shipping/handling

It is made of diecast (chassis and cab) and machined brass (boiler and details). The smoke box cover is made to swing open and looks to be a Cal-Scale casting.

The engine is partially scratchbuilt and the rest is a kitbash of 2 Mantua 2-6-2 parts. It predates the Mantua 2-6-6-2 that was in production a little later.

It was one of the very first larger train purchases I had made on eBay. Every engine in the lot was highly detailed like this one.

/tyco/forum/uploaded/Mustangs_n_Trains/20120905084700_4285296027_3b4e45c511_o.jpg

And this one:

/tyco/forum/uploaded/Mustangs_n_Trains/20120905084725_4286070277_70c661bdd2_z.jpg

Unfortunately the seller packed them all together with no packing in between each. All suffered some minor damage. I was not unhappy however since the seller was listing several more auctions and I was getting nearly them all at great prices. The lot contained approx 6 all brass or nearly all brass steam engines and tenders. I have sold only 3-4 of the smaller steam engines since and have regretted selling each one sold. Won't sell any more.

Other lots purchased from that seller:

Lot of ## Gray Train Pieces - All diesel engines - I might have 1-2 left, sold the rest.
Lot of 28 Red Train Pieces - All detailed cabooses - 8 of which have fully detailed interiors - one with fiber optic lighting is pictured here:

/tyco/forum/uploaded/Mustangs_n_Trains/20120905085003_4286037846_79bd1ae391_o.jpg

There are actually nudie posters hanging on the walls! After seeing this, I began to feel a little sick about missing out on the passenger cars.

This is the photo set I have dedicated to the couple that I actually photographed:

http://www.flickr.com/photos/9977705@N05/sets/72157627197931160/with/5938599129/

Out of everything I purchased from that seller, I sold only 2-3 junkier pieces and have kept the rest.
Lot of ## Brown & Red Train Pieces - All maintenence equipment. - Sold one unpowered MDC flanger snow plow for $65. Don't regret selling it because I got a really good price. The entire lot was very highly detailed.

I purchased a bunch of fully detailed buildings as well, including a 9 stall roundhouse with a fully detailed office interior and a detailed workshop area with overhead cranes. I never actually bid on the roundhouse. The seller emailed me after the original bidder did not pay. Since I had purchased so much from her already, she gave me first dibs. By that time, I had received several of the pieces from the collection and I was in love so to speak, so I jumped.

In all, I ended up with approx 1/3 of the entire collection the lady was selling.

This last piece I saw listed on ebay last year (2011) from a gent in Texas. I knew it had to have originated from the same collection given the name "Signal Hill":

/tyco/forum/uploaded/Mustangs_n_Trains/20120905085232_5938599129_726d144848_z.jpg

/tyco/forum/uploaded/Mustangs_n_Trains/20120905085309_5938599229_6315778907_z.jpg

/tyco/forum/uploaded/Mustangs_n_Trains/20120905085415_5938599361_b37397dff8_z.jpg

Now, I am on the hunt for anything "Signal Hill" If you guys see any, let me know! Please!

What I keep telling myself, if he put this much effort into the interior detailing of the cabooses, who knows what all he had done to the passenger cars. Every car was either a LaBelle or Walthers wood & metal car. Each typically sell for $12-$20 without any interior details. Add the interior details and they usually sell for $40-$60 each. There were 24 of them and I could tell they all had seats and people from the side windows, (which all had curtains too boot!). Heck, they might have had working plumbing! It was not until the lot of cabooses showed up that I was really sick over the passenger cars!

Sorry, I sort of hi-jacked the original posting, but it sort of goes with the theme.. It has been over 7 years and I have not yet gotten over that loss. Since then, I stopped bidding manually and 99% of what I bid on, I use a sniping service.

I've lost out on auctions before too! Could got a few things relatively cheap like a perfectly good AC Gilbert K5 w/ whistle for under $10! Seller had it start at 99 cents and no bids. Got relisted and sold for over $100!

I use "BidNip" if there is something I really want to buy on Ebay.. It automatically makes the bid for you. You can set it to bid within the last few seconds of the auction. Costs 69 cents per bid (I think, haven't used it recently) but it's well worth it to be sure your bid gets made...

BidNip gives you several free bids before you have to buy anything....

The one I use is $0.25 per bid and it is an additional $0.01 for ever $1 bid over $25. The max charge is $9.99 for a $1,000 bid or more. I have purchased '69 Mustang parts for $2,700 and paid $9.99 for the bid. With all the buying I do, i spend about $150 - $200 per year on sniping services and it frees up a whole lot of time. I have averaged 7-10 listings sniped / won every week for the last 4-5 years. Only pay for the ones "won".

Most bids I place are less than $50, so at $0.69 per bid, I think you are paying too much there Walt. I can refer you to my service if you like.

Currently, I must note that all my trains are of little use as I don't have a model railroad, and I don't think the school's regiment would allow me to build a model railroad under my bed, especially at a Maritime schoool!

I don't mean to make it sound like a worthless engine, it's just that I hadn't been able to get her to work, and I'm not really a fan of GP20's. I got it while cleaning out a basement for a friend's grandpa. I meant to portray that while I like the locomotive, I doubt it's going into the shops for a few years here, and it may do better working on someone else's pike. If I take a tyco from Jude's stuff, then maybe thing's will go along faster.

Sorry to offend anyone about Tyco/Mantua, I've just prefered Ahm and Athearn.

I didn't read all the replies so sorry if this was covered.
While watching an auction the other night I discovered that the amount of minutes till the auction ended on the main page, listing the item, was way behind the minutes on the bid page. If I hadn't noticed that I would have lost the item.

I haven't seen the timer discrepancy, but I have had the timer not function on the occasional auction so that constant refreshing in the last hour is necessary.

One way to deal with Ebay is to open two windows, one the actual bidding window, the other the Update Status window. Yes, you can! (do this ). I do it all the time. This saves the step of the bidding window changing to the REALLY hit the bid button from the entering the bid window, yet you can still flip back and forth between the status window to check the time. Long as you don't have a slow internet connection, it works fine. The next best bidding tip is when it gets down to 15 seconds or so, you need to stop thinking of $1 increments, and say How high do I want to go? And just bid that amount. If there's that much action on the item, you won't get a bargain anyway, so just bet the 5, 10, or whatever over what you have up to what you are REALLY willing to pay, and take your chances. Trying to save a buck ain't worth it if you keep losing out on something you really , really want. Just make sure you know WHAT you want to pay ahead of time, and then bid accordingly at the end. If you lose, well, someone wanted it much worse than you.

Far as "saving" old engines, or using others to fix one, you can always save the parts loco to repair at another time, if it's good enough to do so. Eventually you may run across the parts by themselves to fix them all. Long as you have the space, and understanding SO, to allow it. I don't throw away parts locos, they hang around until I need them again, or I buy another partial loco I can make one out of two. But nothing goes to waste with me. Long as you have the room to store them. Some guys don't, obviously ( those in school, small apartments, etc. ).

Don't make this too difficult guys. I use "Gixen". It is free. It is a snipe bidding tool. Lets just say I only lose when it exceeds my dollar amount. I've won at 100's of auctions with only one time an issue.

Cool thing is you can set them as a group and if one of the auctions you win it will not bid on the others. Like I buy STP stock cars. I see 6 I like, if I win one it will not bid on the other 5 if I wish to set it like that.

Hi Fred,
I think it is an imaginary RR that some one made up. I purchased the lot back in 2005 and when it cam tried to see if it represented anything real and found nothing. The detail on the pieces are incredible. I have several buildings and other pieces from this same collection. It is all outstanding. I would like to someday get the cabooses all put back together and display them. They are truly worthy of it.
