Just bought this beauty...
Beauty because I paid less than $10 for it, was labled NR (Not Running), took it home, on rails, power, jiggle push... Rolling!
Dealer said it may be a Varney...
What do you say?

To me, it looks similar to my Mantua 4-6-2 that y'all identified... same springy front truck assembly. Except, this 4-4-2 (Atlantic) is ALL Die-caste with brass parts.
Less than $10... Gimmie your notes, comments, beefs, boquets, opinions... gimmie your knowledge, PLEASE. See? I said "Please".
John
I don't have a one track mind. It depends on the turn-out. "I love your catenary!" Is that a power-trip or just another pick-up line?

If it's Brass, it's NOT Mantua. Looks to be a high-end collectible done entirely in brass to me.

Just rephrasing, it's die-cast Zinc with brass wheel and crosshead parts.
It isn't all brass. on my part.
Wha'cha know?

Clearly an MDC Roundhouse 4-4-2 Atlantic. it's an older kit which would explain the brass wheels. More recent 80s-90s kits were nickel silver wheels like my 2-8-0 #3. All cast metal, frame, boiler, and tender frame. Only plastic is the tender shell and the cab. Very nice for $10!! Very lucky for that price! Definately incomplete, missing its handrails on the smokebox door and sides of the boiler. Missing its number boards and headlight not to mention tender footboard and handrails. BUT the fact that it's got it's mechanical parts makes it a great find! Hope this helps!

MDC is what I'm going with. Much older kit. Try looking for it's proper diagram at hoseeker. Thomas, if that makes ya jealous, I got a Ken Kidder plantation 0-4-0 for $15! Or, how about a Tyco Model Railroader Anniversary boxcar in mint shape for $15!

Thats a for sure MDC Roundhouse 4-4-2....The boiler is actually one used on the more modern short 2-8-0 that they also made. As I have the 2-8-0 myself.....I also have the same cylinder "steam chest" that the picture shows, and the tender I know for a fact is an MDC Roundhouse model as I had 3 or 4 of them and only have one left!

There are at least 3 different 4-4-2 Atlantic offerings for Model Die Cast alone...
I believe mine is the 12L-2...
I bought it because I know that the Chicago & North Western Rwy had a few of them... except that they didn't have the cylinder tender.
Someone said that... Yardbirds would have the detail parts that I need to complete/finish this loco'?
By the way, I did a little scrubbing on the cab side... the number 3041 showed up with some tiny specifications on the bottom edge. Anyone with knowledge of Atlantics numbered 3041? A.T.S.F.? Southern Pacific?
I also cleaned up the wheels, filed off burs and flash on the trailing-truck below the cab...
It goes faster in reverse... but it's a smoothie in both directions. Stuck a hunk of coal in the tender-hopper...
I know, I could enter this in LOTW, but I'd rather have the full scoop before I put it in.
I'd appreciate any more information.

John, Your MDC Roundhouse 4-4-2, with the cab number 3041, makes it a Southern Pacific locomotive. I say this as I have a cab to one of them, myself!
Not to mention the Vanderbuilt tender (cylinder tender) is a known tender for the SP.

Hmmm... Did I remember correctly... uh... have you a Demonstrator locomotive? I recall seeing something in one of your motive power line-ups on a shelf...
If so, I'd really consider a trade. I surely know you have a heart for Southern Pacific rolling stock. I have a few SP railcars on my roster... perhaps a package deal. I am also noting that your model railroad is in the workings, busy of a major overhaul.
Let me know. Perhaps we, you and I, (and a third party if I'm in error thinking you do have a demo') can do a swap.
