I won an auction for a NYC GP20. I have become interested in the GPs recently and didn't have an NYC. The one at auction looked like a good example but had 6536 on the cab instead of Tycos usual 5628. After studying the photos as best I could it seemed that this was the way it was produced by Mantua Tyco and after some research it may have been done around 1962-'64. 6536 is a number used on the early CN F9s from the same time period though the CN F9 T224K was produced a year earlier according to the '61 catalog. The 6536 CN F9 is pictured in the 1964 catalog in the Dominion Express Set. The two pictures show that the numerals look to be of the same font. The T228D NYC GP20 first appears listed in the 1962 catalog but doesn't state the number.

Nice find! Road# variants are among my favorites; I was aware of the CN unit differences but the NYC might be new to me. My NYC is 5623 with the solid pilot. My CN F-unit is #5628. Oddly enough, the GenII CN-F-unit has the separate numberboards, #5628 to match... they are of course different from the GP20 numberboards. I'll have to keep an eye out for these here.
I'd say that the 6536 number originated with the CN F-unit. Most of Tyco's F's had different numbers but as most people know, the road switchers generally had just one.

Uh... whoops! I meant 5628. Obviously "5623" was a typo, but how the heck did I do that: 3 and 8 aren't anywhere near each other?! Not trying to cause any undue excitement. It is 5 6 2 8!! (although it would be pretty dang easy to turn an "8" into a "3"... )

Spiderj
I didn't catch the typo, no harm no foul.
There's the NYC 6536 GP20 at home after it's been properly dusted. Missing the rear coupler but still pretty rare with nice crisp zebra stripes on the pilots. The horns look almost white.

I thought this was interesting. Must be an actual locomotive number that was used by the CN and appears on this AHM CN C=liner and on an early Tyco CN F9 and on the Mantua NYC GP20
