I wouldn't mind riding like a hobo. 
There are lots of great scenic opportunities on trains in North America, including the Canadian Rockies. It's nice to see a news feature on them, and there was another Yahoo story a few months back about the top US rail trips.
In the northeast, I recommend the Saratoga & North Creek Railway, which runs on D&H's old line through the Adirondacks. It's a tourist line and winter ski train, but was subverted by a complete lack of snow last year, something that rarely happens up there.
