Guys, I thought I'd make a posting of this one. I'm partial to the EMD GP30......just because of its "stylish" looks.....

Glad to see they still are around today even if they're RDMT "slugs".....

This model was made by Bachmann, the train set GP30. Took and removed EVERYTHING, then added grab irons, windshield wipers, MU cables, air hoses both front and back pilots, life rings, you name it..... Then it got painted in my favorite B&O paint scheme that was ever on a GP30....

After painting, it got the same treatment with handrailing, all metal from Athearn stanchions, custom fitted "rails" and then it got painted......

After the shell was done, the factory frame was scrapped and a new Athearn GP35 frame was used, powered with a Athearn C44-9W motor and flywheels. It once was dual mode DCC with sound, but I didn't like it as that was a sound chip and decoder out of an Athearn Genesis SD45-2, which was not a 567 EMD it was a 645 so......AND it was troubled. I had nothing but issues with that whole mess of electronics and got rid of it. I'll find another one to add to it at some point but for now, shes all DC cab control!

Those my friend are the stanchions from Athearn. The old blue box era "kit" locomotives, I collect them for such things as I myself, HATE (and I know the word "hate" is such a strong word!) plastic handrailing, and I replace ALL of it I can with metal. it will bend if bumped, can be easily re-straightened, scuffed? repaints easily. And will take normal handling, well without breaking. I can't say that for the plastic stuff!

I use the Athearn stanchions, to make custom bent rails that are made from hard music wire thats .025 thick, which is the exact thickness of the factory Athearn handrailing "rails"

Nice work as always, John. I don't know why people consider the GP30 ugly... I think they're cool too. They look like a diesel with a 'tude.

Nelson,
Yes, I agree they did look to have some 'tude, nevertheless they still on the rails and not being rendered scrap these days, well atleast under CSX anyway, alot are RDMT slugs which I don't care if the prime mover is still moving, its the shell thats got me......it still carries that "look" about itself, you know?

Yes they were different, but a stylish, different.....
