Guys,
I thought this one was worth posting tonight as well....

A Roco depress center flat car, with a 100% custom built from scratch transformer load.

The transformer was made out of "Construction" siding trim, thats styrene like or well works GREAT with liquid styrene glue so.....But anyway, all this is cut with a table saw to a rough size, then milled to get the raises and lowers of the tubular parts, and then all the added details, like wire route boxes, and route piping and even other building details for electrcal panels, and if you look close you can see a power light at the top of the ladder, thats for night work if needed to be done.

The down rods that look like threaded "All-Thread" is actually made from heavier guitar strings! Looks pretty good and I have found a few other uses for guitar strings so.....DaCheez, ought to find that interesting!

The insulators are a design of my own.....Anyone interested, I'll be making those to order for sale or for trade....Heres some close up pictures of those:

Needless to say, I have more details to add to this car before I call it "done" but this is a good start on it to show off the custom made/designed load the car carries!

Enjoy!

Awesome transformer, John. I just bought one of those Roco depressed center flats with an oversized tank load at the LHS last week.

Thanks guys! The car itself I painted.....

Nelson, I have an attachment to open loaded cars.....Just looks to realistic when done!

The transformer was a thought that I wasn't paying Walthers $10.00, for something I could make for pennies on tghe dollar. The most I have in the transformer is time.

The insulators, those I'll be making them to sell or trade so....Anyone interested PM me on it!

And yes, Ben, they will be made to fit telephone poles!

That's okay, John. I'll get my own green glass beads. Nice job on the paint, tie-downs, and decking as well. Those trucks sure look good when painted.

Nelson,
Yes, they do look good painted (Western Maryland did that on a few car types, the depress Center flat cars being one of the types they painted the trucks on. (They only had 2 of those cars, tho....)

Anyway, the tie downs would amaze you, on what they are made of!

Well everyone, & Nelson,
I thought I had a picture of the other BIG flat car of mine and had to find it and here it is!

This car, is a Walthers 4 truck, depress center flat car, that I wanted a "Large" load on it and as you can see, I got just that. I took apart an old motor that was burned up and cleaned it up a bit and then made the bunks thats under it to look like a Generator armature that was being hauled off to be replaced with a newer one which is on or well going to be on another car of the same type only the other car will be painted in TTX paint!

Then, I added all the crating for this load on the top higher section of the car. With the armature, it was bolted from the underside of the car, as it is HEAVY, I also added in Kadee fully sprung and equalized trucks to help with the weight! Then the armature got the metal tie downs as per areal thing would have been welded to the cars deck, which I done and then it was even safety chained as well, which, I also did, because of the weight in real life this would have had a "web" of chains going in what would seem a million different directions!

All the crating is also chained, only the armature was bolted from the under side of the car.

Then once all was done, everything was lightly weathered. I didn't weather the car, BUT, I do weather the loads, depending on what they are of and what they are to represent.

Also, this is my 700th posting!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Awesome, dude! That is some turbine armature you got there. What appliance did that come from?

I'll bet that flat tracks well with all that weight. Note all of the drilled spots that were done at the factory to balance the armature.

Guy,
Thanks! I like my "open loaded" cars needless to say!

As for tracking well, you betcha! They both do! Altho I added Kadee trucks to the Walthers Depress center to handle the weight as they are metal casted trucks instead of the plastic ones......I don't think the plastic ones would handle the weight for very long under "running" or "moving" conditions! The WM car, ALSO has metal wheelset axles, no plastic crap there eitgher! Not that the transformer is as heavy as the turbine armature but........

AS for the armature, I'm not sure what I'm going to list that load as for the appliance, BUT what it did come out of was an old kitchen mixer, NOT hand held, the table mount type.....THEN, I GOT MY HANDS IN IT!

The one thats going to be like it, is mounted on a TTX car of the same from Walthers, DOES not have the drilled holes for balancing! Thought that was an interesting detail myself, between the old and the new one!

But I think the "Turbine Armature" would be GREAT for the load history.....

As for the Armature guys..... it actually weights 1.5 pounds!

John,

Yep, the closest thing I could come up with would be a generating turbine armature for a power plant or hydro-electric dam, although I think they are proportioned more like pancake armatures.

Nelson,
Well isn't the hydro-electric plant generators the ones with the large "pancake" type armatures?

The turbine generator on that load would be a much better explanation....at least of what I know of them anyway.

John!

I love them both! The armature I was thinking it was to would have been an old drill, but a mixer works well too! It does not have to be real and represent an actual piece of equipment. It is all about how it is presented...and secured to the car. Get those details right, as you have and it is all the more believable and realistic!

Good job!

Sean,
You would LOVE to see the other "open loaded" cars I've done then! I have ALWAYS loved the looks of them and how they go together as real as possible.....The Western Maryland car with the transformer isn't done yet!

I have a 1920's regular ole flat car, that I loaded an OLD "Holt" bulldozer on it............ As I have an attachment to Caterpillar equipment in real life, and in scale models along with the trains, so......Its chained and has a "crate" with it on a shorty old time flat car......I got A TON of these type cars all for "special movement" type operations on my layout.......SOME, will be added to the front of trains that are made in the yard, to the front of speciffic trains leaving the classification yard, others as I said will have a "special" to its destination.
