Guys,
I know a few of you have been "waiting" to see the passenger train collection I have and what I'm about to post is merely of the sets I have done, OR partially done as a few are still in need of some finished cars I have awaiting the finishing touches! Some in need of details that I have to sit down and make!

So, here we go!

First up, is my Rivarossi B&O "Capitol Limited" Custom painted to the B&O, and awaits interiors and passengers! PLUS, will be lighted when its all said and done with.

Then the second B&O passenger set:

This set is the beginning of the B&O's "Royal Blue". I have not yet completed all the cars and as you see, these cars, well, some were pre cut to size and I liked how it looked only in one case did I make amendments to the work that was done by someone else due to the fact that they used cardboard, instead of sheet styrene!

Again, they all await interiors, and passengers..... Thank GOD, my wife paints all my "little people" as I have to custom make the interiors!

Then I have mentioned a few times I have the Mantua Collectable, "President Washington" 4-6-2 thats a B&O P-7 class Pacific. WELL, I went a step further and done up a "Presidents Special" passenger train in B&O. ALL these cars are awaiting decals, stripes, and details, along with interiors, and passengers (yet, again!)

NOW, question, can ANYONE tell me whats wrong with this picture????? BESIDES the obvious the B&O NEVER had a green and gray train! They were either all blue, or blue and gray, but NEVER green and gray, I just HAD to do it as the Mantua Collectable didn't look quite right pulling a blue and gray train around! (Which, it actually did in the years the locomotives were repainted and were either all blue, OR all green!

Look at the cars really close and tell me what you see....

And yes, once again, another B&O passenger set...... for my Rivarossi 4-4-0, "William Mason" a passenger set to go with him!

Again, custom painted, and lettered and this train is as close to the color as I could get, and has somewhat prototypical lettering on it..

These cars are MDC Roundhouse, with alittle more detail added in, grab irons and special handrailing on certain cars.....However the old B&O had used brass alot on their older cars back in the hay day of shorty passenger cars they had alot of polished brass on them so......I think it looks GREAT and fits right in!

Now, to switch gears, I'm going to go to another railroad I model.........The Western Maryland Railway.....YES I have a passenger train for them too! the following picture is only missing ONE car from this set, which I have yet to paint and decal. I do however, have this car, I just got to get around to doing it!

At one time when I was growing up there were 2 of these setting directly across the street from my home place....I remember them well, and have fond memories playing and around them as they were setting there for storage! Anyway, back then, there was a place called "Doghouse Hobbies" that done nothing but custom paint out of Cumberland, MD, OR Keyser, WV, (I'm not sure which), but this guy made his own printing plates of the lettering and stamped it on the shells of Athearn cars, and was getting like $40, and $50 A CAR depending the car type!

I never did buy any........... but thought I could do just as well with water slide decals!!!! On Athearn cars!

This is one set, I don't have a Western Maryland K-2 class 4-6-2 for, I have to custom build it, go figure! Unless I buy brass... and thats not gonna happen!

And the next one.. is for Ben.....

8 cars, from MDC roadnumbers 791 to 798! (I'm not sure of they made a 790, or a 799 car) but, this is pretty long for a shay to start with and if I had found those 2 cars, I'd get them anyway as I'm kind of fond of this set even tho, it doesn't fit in my roam of prototype models, I just like the Shays, and its my favorite of the geared steamers so......

Ben, ENJOY!

Frank,
Those are the TYCO-Mantua cars, I know, and sadly aren't painted prototypical to the B&O of the late 1800's. They didn't go to the "blue" paint till like 1905! The TYCO-Mantua cars are from the 1880's actually so would be painted in the maroon paint.

The collectors aren't looking for the proto type, BUT is looking for the road name. Were, I'm looking for the prototype itself, not so much the "collectability" of the model.

Nice collection, John! Although streamliners are more my cup of tea, I admire the obvious patience and attention to detail that goes in to custom painting all of those set. The best I've ever done is a single dome car I guess you either have more patience, motivation, or just more time than I do

The stripes on this were all masked and painted, BTW. No decals!

Nice work Eric!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Those I have posted, are the start! I have atleast 2 Streamliner sets to do as well! in B&O!

I'm collecting the cars needed to put that one together, one is an Athearn set, the other is the 1930's version Rivarossi Streamline cars..... Needless to say, I've got a long ways to go!

I also have the Chessie Steam Special to complete, THEN a Chessie System Executive train as well as the Executive train for CSX.......

I think the CSX will be done from Con-Cor HO scale cars....As I have the smooth side and the corrugated side cars from Con-Cor.....

THEN, I have the 45 AND 50 foot early 1900's trains to do as I have the locomotives for them!

Well over 50 cars total!

Eric,
Heres a difficult car to do in HO scale:

This car was found, in real life in Lincoln, New Hampshire being restored to its B&O state, "President's Car" PC-100.

The name on the car:

"SUITSME" was done one letter at a time, cut out of a set of B&O letting decals that were for B&O "Car Names" set from Microscale.

Looks GREAT tho, took 4 hours a side to add the stripes!

Eric,
yes, those stripes are decals... they are actually about 1/16 of an inch wide! so not easily handled to say the lest, and to that, each strip is about 4 to 5 inches long.....Multiple sections at a time.....

Then.........the FUN making them straight!!!!!!! Thats the hard part as I get all my decals in place first, make 'em all straight and then add the decal set to the whole side of the car on one decal "type" such as one strip at a time.....Allow it to dry, and then once dry, begin the next one!

It took me 4 hours a side on the stripes ALONE, never mind the few other decals... the word "SUITSME" was done one letter at a time, and took less time to get straight and evenly spaced then one single full length stripe!

* For Johm and other B&O modelers. When at Steamtown in one end of the roundhouse section I was working in sat this B&O Pullman observation car. One end as shown in photo has the open observation platform. The oposite end a enclosed vestiabule with doors on both sides. Different from the model photo. I can only find this photo of the platform end. I think I have it in a short video of the car with a walk through it.

Frank,
NICE catch with a camera!

The Observation was a heavy weight car, standard for the B&O by Pullman, HOWEVER these cars in later years were re-worked to be "turtle roof" cars as the B&O called them as they were round roof cars after that.

The picture of this car you got, was also Air Conditioned as well, hence the roof top line that was a celestory roof car, with the more rounded duct work that shows in your picture.

Some of these cars were completely rebuilt at the car shops to have stainless steel sides on the lower half of the body. They polished this, painted the center section (window section) gray, and repainted the top half Bando blue (YES, that was a special mix of paint just for the B&O by Dupont way back when!)

You speaking of my question on the green and gray cars? I ask as these cars are ATHEARN! I made a set of these from multiple Athearn round roof heavy weight coaches as the that, (the round roof Athearn Coach) was the ONLY round roof car Athearn made, with a round roof!

As mentioned above, these cars, were known by the B&O calling them "Turtle Roof" cars, wether it be a Turtle Roof Observation, or Turtle Roof Coach, or a Turtle Roof RPO.....You get my point.

Thomas,
Thank you! The Combine, was a mess.....I had 2 broken cars. A RPO, that was missing one entire end, a round roof coach that was cracked on one end, and then the needed round roof coach. I took the 2 cars, and made the one broken RPO the large door end, and then used the remaining into the combine coach body. The round roof coach made that all possible to add the round roof, and the windows much easier to do! That "set picture" doesn't show detail well, BUT I plan to get pictures of each individual car at some point over the weekend! IF time permits as that is alot of cars!

Great job on the entire fleet...I'm in the process of building L&Ns' Hummingbird and the ICs' City of New Orleans...both as static displays....my layout wont be big enough to run them

I might add that this, is only part of the fleet I have to build! Sadly, I have to custom paint EVERY car as I'm working to make each train as prototypical as very possible!

In some cases, I have to add grab irons and stirrups. These will be all wire details so.....Specially to the Rivarossi Blue and Gray set in the first picture. As they had all of these broken off or removed for whatever reason but the added on details will look better once I do it.

I have another set thats just like the Rivarossi set, thats IHC, painted all Virginian green to go with the green B&O P-7 Pacifics I have!

Then, I have the early 1900's to model as I have the locomotives, I just never had all the needed passenger cars and went on a collecting spree about 4 years ago, and now, I bet I have something like 100 passenger cars or better, and atleast 50 of them, to choose the needed models from! the remaining ones, you see here!

So, in time, I will have one HUGE fleet of passenger cars!

All I can say at this point is, its about time!
