What ever happened to the 4-6-2 that roundhouse planned on releasing years ago? Why was production Cancled? Does Athearn still have plans to make it?

I've seen commentary on the web that Athearn canceled due to vendor problems. I have also heard that their 2-8-2 had some problems such as inadequate pulling power and the dreaded cracked-gear problem (like early Proto diesels) so maybe that is what it was. In any case, this is all hearsay, so take this all with a grain of salt.

Thanks Ken. Always go right to the source.

Sorry for the "corp speak". When I said vendor I meant the company that manufactures the loco for Athearn.

Cheers, Thomas

History repeats itself...Irv lost about $50K trying to bring one out in '58, it didn't come out 'til '61. It never was right and came out it 3-4 variations to boot.

The 0-6-0 was better received and a model of a more common loco. The 0-4-2 Lil' Monster was the only other one but they were all gone by '63 when Irv went diesel and never looked back.

Athearn did a Genesis model 2-8-2 and a 4-6-2, both were USRA designs.... Which were actually made by Samhongsa in plastic, not brass. I have a 2-8-2 and I have to say it don't pull to bad, BUT it does have issues with the front pilot truck picking any slight (and I do mean slight) less then perfect imperfections in the rail itself.....

I never even heard that MDC was to offer a 4-6-2, possibly a better rendition then the Athearn Genesis version?

I'd LOVE to see Bachmann do a B&O Q-4 B&O 2-8-2, and even a T-3t 4-8-2 to run with the mighty EM-1 they done! And if not the 2-8-2, they already have the frame to build a 2-10-2 then! nice thought for some running mates!
