Does anyone know if any of the currently available coal loads for 40' hoppers fit well in the old Tyco hoppers? If so, what manufacturers are they, or is there still a source for Tyco/Mantua loads?

I actually make my own loads with a sheet of plast to sit inside the top of the car and then glue it inplace and fill the void with decorative black sand, as you would ballast your tracks, and it looks GREAT.....Better then that plastic stuff thats out there, and then without painting the black sand, it looks just like coal without painting!

They even have oxide red stuff that would be good for Iron Ore for the shorty hoppers......

I was at a show and bought a lot of 10 or 15 loads for next to noting. All of them were for 50 cars. I just carefully cut a bit off each end. Fits my Athearn BB, Mantua and Tyco stuff perfectly. These where loads that had actual stones glued to a wood or plastic base. I suspect they were either from the early days or custom jobs as the had no manufacturer and did not have made in China stamped anywhere.

A club member of mine makes custom coal loads for HO, I found out his Athearn 40' load fits the Tyco Virginian hopper just fine. Seems to me he charges about $7 for two, I could be wrong, so check with him on pricing. If you're interested, his email is - trains007@gmail.com, his name is Dave Ptak, tell him Jerry Casper from PWMRC sent ya if you do contact him.
