| Remember the olden daze when Irv was still alive and Athearn was spelled A-F-F-O-R-D-A-B-L-E?

If Irv was still alive AND in his right mind, these would be built in the U.S.
I feel it's a bit of shame that kits are no longer being produced... everything is R-T-R and not less than $25...
My local hobby shop just got a slew of old-new stock Athearn kits and selling them for $5.00 each. Right now, there's UP Standard Overlander passenger cars, Pennsy streamline RPO, Diner, and tapered observation cars, some 87' CN boxcars...
sorry, I was dazzing off...

It makes me sick to the fate of this hobby that "kits" are a thing of the past.....I LOVE to build, no matter if I do a modification or not, its still a part of the hobby, and to that, yes, those out there that aren't great at it, well practice makes perfect, and I was there at one time bow, I rip everything apart to either change/make things right, OR want to build something from an existing model to be more of a specific prototype.....
Cost? 3/4th a normal pay check, how offen do I buy like that? once in a 5 year period of time! Why? just not worth the made in China product.....
Irv had it right when he was alive and kickin' Horizon Hobbies screwed us kit builders......And then when other seen that from the "new day" Athearn, they followed suit! (Says a few choice words)
I have an array of old Model Railroader magazines and old catalogs, and I tell you I love to look through them but the sickening part of it is the cost......You have a 40 foot box car from say the late 1980's or early 1990's cost? $4.00 and some change depending the shop that has it advertised, today same car? $19.99 to $29.99 depending on roadname and shop that has it advertised! Outrageous!
OK I'll stop now! I can see a hundred or so for a big steamer, I can't see spending $200 on a damned yard diesel switcher.....Sound or not!

Too many customers want RTR now, no time to build. Life is too busy for them. I don't have time either, but I do still buy some kits for "future" use. LOL. When I retire, maybe. Anyway, glad there are those who still find joy and pleasure in the self-made part of this hobby.

I do both ready to run and still get kits. Some of the RTR cars and engines are simply gorgeous. That being said as most of you can see from my Athern workbench, I much prefer to build. There is much greater satisfaction in doing that then in RTR. I guess if i see a RTR car I like, I pick it up. Same goes for old blue box kits.
If you are not having fun, you are not doing it right.

I'm to the point if its RTR and isn't a paint scheme I want, it will become a kit!
I'll rip it apart and redo it!

We should add a "like" button for posts.
Everyone with an ounce of mechanical skill knows that a Hobbytown kit is better than a modern plastic diesel anyday! I'd like to see some of those RTR trains run for 50 years pulling 100 average rolling freight cars with nothing but minor tune-ups every so often. An accident in a hobby store became an add for Hobbytown when one of their kits got stuck in place and kept running in that one spot the entire night, digging deep grooves into the track and still being in perfect running condition afterwords. Long live the kits!

By the way, I love the new ultra-detailed trains we've got now. But when I get a kit and put it together, it tends to become a favorite.

just put teeth on the drivers of the Hobbytown drivers and you'd have a mini HO saw mill! I have a few of the frames they made to be used under the old Athearn HI-FI drive shells, to make them real pullers 2 being a GP-9 frame, add in a good can motor and the thing will pull yer house!
I think the other one is a frame for an Athearn F-7 shell!

You know what'll really pull the walls down? The classic Hobbytown low-speed geared F-unit chassis with additional weights, an O-gauge Pittman DC-91 motor, brass wheels, and a Cary metal body to top it all off! Then add one or two multi-drive chassis with Cary shells, and you could stop the Earth if you hit the throttle too hard!

Good point Darth! I wished Cary still made shells......affordable but thats just me, I'd LOVE to get my hands on one of their 2-10-0 boilers for Mantua......BUT for the like, of modeling I'm planning to do, the Mantua "heavy" boiler is a real close match for the locomotive, I'm planning to build......Western Maryland 2-10-0 I-2, "Four Aces" #1111
I have one of the Bachmann Spectrum 2-10-0 Russian Decapods, that runs really well so......(I was un-trusting when I found out its belt drive!) But to my surprise, it runs and pulls really well for its size!
I do however have 3 of the Cary diesel shells, one S-2, one H10-44, and one SW15000.... 2 of them, completed on Athearn frames and are really good pullers, now if I could come up with the Ernst gearing for them to slow 'em down to pull that be a nice little switcher to say the least!
I wonder what the big E units would be like!?

I personially do not mind the RTR stuff, especially when its highly detailed stuff, I am not that skilled yet nor do I have many tools (still building up my supplies too) but for the simple kits I will grab them and make them, heck next purchase I hope to make is a small air gun for finger nail and other small hobbies like that and use a few broken engines to test my ideas for paint schemes on my freelanced RR, that way I can get better and move on to the better bigger stuff I want to do, granted RTR is quite a bit of my fleet but I am slowly trying to find and make kits to proudly display and say I built that my self and painted it too....
that is why I love the ocal store I go to, they sell kits for about $7.00 (give or take) and most cars that are tyco or life like or similar early stuff (or any type really) is about $5 - $10...where it should be....my entire fleet is second hand trains and the best part is I spent maybe shy of $600 so far for what I have, and I even have a few odd ball pieces too....so as far as Im concerned I haven't done too bad there....oh and I will happily stick to my older DD40AX version that I have.....it works and I don't plan on replacing it soon...hell I may even send it off to John to have him remoter it and slap some DCC and beacons and a howler on it....that is if your up for the challenge John ;)

The following thread I posted is the difficult stuff:
