yes of course, there were 3 main types of geared logging locomotives. The shay, the heisler, and the climax. shays were built first and were more prefered due to their exposed gears and shafts, easy to give maintenance. Heislers were the fastest ones of the 3 but even then the top speed was around 20MPH! Climaxs were the cheapest to make, but were known for not being the most durable. Thats why most were scrapped and theres only 17 left in the world. Only 4 operatiing in the world! Shays there are plenty especially as the cass scenic railroad in west virginia. Heislers are also commonly operating on my side of the U.S (the west coast) hope this helps!
this is a shay
the heisler
and heres a climax i love geared logging locomotives!! I own a 3 truck climax in HO scale and my plan is to get all 3 types on my railroad. The heislers are harder to find (cheaply) so most likely a shay is next for me. Other than geared engines, logging railroads had some pretty cool rod engines too!

This one is actually a Heisler:

Kind of looks like a shay though.
Now these two are actually Climax(s):

It's the only loco I ever paid full retail for. Dad and I rode train excursions together for awhile with the idea of riding the Cass 'one day'. That day never came and so when he passed away in '03, I went out and bought the first one I could find lettered for the Cass in his honor.

My 3rd favorite steamers! The Shays.... I am partial to the Western Maryland #6, which resides and works at Cass Scenic Railroad......Needless to say, I think everyone who knows me knows what my 2 first favorite steamers are......
I have a Spectrum 3 truck, undecorated, a MDC Roundhouse 3 truck, undecorated, and a Rivarossi 3 truck Heisler.....
The MDC Roundhouse model will be a Western Maryland #5, 4 truck Shay when I'm finished with it, the Bachmann Spectrum, I'm not sure what he will become, and the Rivarossi Heisler, will remain, Ohio Match, #1........

SCVR, The Rivarossi Heisler, I got I paid $90.00 for it, BUT was brand new never out of box! Its the newest release too! The older one that you want, be CAREFULL, you can't re-power them easily! The top gear box that transmitts the movement to the drive is married! And the motor shaft is made specifically for that gear transmission!
I'm going to wind up at some point, re-designing the drive to it so that the motor sits in the oil bunker, and the original motor will be a transfer shaft, but I have to figure out what sort of "carrier bearing" system I'm going to use for the original motor shaft.....Then to boot as always, there isn't alot of space in the insides to work with!
