Well, this has certainly been a productive summer on the Minnesota, Sioux Lake & Western! Recently, the Sioux Lake Shops finished refurbishment on an old Bucyrus Erie 200ton railroad crane.
I started with an undecorated Athearn 200ton Crane. I had also purchased a second PRR one(in unpainted, but decaled black) at another flea market event earlier, so I offer this as the starting point for my project:

I had read articles about the tipping tendency of the model when the cab and derrick moved out to the sides of the car, so I was able to squeeze in a bit more weight:
These are the Walmart lead weights I "monger" in my workshop, and the result of applied hammering:

I located the weight in the center turret, as that was easier than interfering with the bottom weight of th car, and maintained overall balance.
I decided to add grab irons for the doors on each side that appeared to open (there are two mid-body ones that appear to be fixed), so I used masking tape to find the exact intersections I needed to drill at. The grabs were made from .015 piano wire. I also made grabs for the deck of the crane base car as well.

The paint work was similar to the 3 previous MOW cars, except that I painted the rear ladders completely, to give it a novel appearance, and aviod the painstaking masking task that would have been required to paint just the railings of the ladders. Besides, it looks sort of cool! The railroad name font size is a bit larger than the other cars, based on the research photos I found online.
This is the end result:

And finally, some family shots, with an old friend- the Center Cab- helping out!:

I think that 4 MOW cars is more than enough for my small GN subsidiary line...time for something completely different...a refurbished RDC car! Back with that soon!

Awesome MOW train, Ron.
One question: Is the little Ge Center Cab strong enough to pull all that?

Nelson- I swear, as my beautiful and talented daughter was watching this morning, that lineup is on my test track, powered by Tyco, mind you, and that little AHM center cab moved the boys along quite easily ( if only for about another foot of track )! Both forward and backward, no less!
The reason for stopping at a 4-set of MOW cars is not only that it can become visually monotonous, but I am building a switching layout that precludes too much of any one thing. The project was a skill-builder for decaling and making "something more" out of "plain vanilla", as two of the cars are $7.00 Model Power Hobbytown purchases, and the crane and tender are flea market old BBs. My total car cost for all of them was $30.00. The labor was free!

Ron, VERY nice! Nice choice in the way you done the work and I might add the cost!
Have a look at the MOW train I've been building since 1988!

Jim, Did ya watch the video I posted? Thats a long MOW train and there is more to it then seen as I made some more pieces I just have to get good pictures of them to add into my pictured roster of MOW cars to the freelanced "B&O set"
Then, to add to it, I'm building MOW trains for the Western Maryland, Chessie System and CSX, currently the B&O one you see here was started way back in 1988!

Could I contract you out to build one (or two) for the New Berlin RR (my freelanced railroad) as well? I just drooled all over my iPad when I saw it so yea I am somewhat jealous now LOL!!! puts my tiny attempted work train to shame!! now I don't want to show it as yours just shames it :(

Jim, Don't feel that way..... I'm always up to see others work....."Shames" NEVER..... I just do the best i can with what I have on hand or given unless its a repair that I'm doing and then it gets 100% of 100%.....
That B&O MOW train you see in the video? That whole train, (EXCEPT the locomotive) was built from junk cars! And the cars I have been building are also carrying that with them, they too were "junk" to most people, all I did was restore them, to working condition, and gave them a custom paint job, with alot of added detail!
But for making your MOW train, you sure can contract me to build it.....I have ALOT of MOW cars in duplicates already if your interested, e-mail me on it OR contact me through my website!
