I have several "el cheapo" Model Power freight cars that I want to do some improvements to. The trucks on these look like this:

The truck is a talgo-type that appears to snap onto a plastic bolster. The coupler box appears seated "above" the truck and has a cheap McHenry (?) whisker coupler in it.
I read that these cars may be derived from either Tyco or Cox heritage.
Anyone remove and replace this type of thing?

Ron, Yes to remove those trucks, take a rather large flat screw driver and put the "blade" of it it between the center portion of that truck, see where the pin is? on either side stick the screw driver beteen those "rails" if you will of the truck frame, and spred by twisting the screw driver, the truck should all but fall right off the bolster pin thats in the floor of the car!

*** Your flat car has already be modified, and is not original, as built. If it was left alone, or just the coupler changed it would have been better. I really can't see how much it has been modified.
* * About these trucks. They are not Tyco. They were designed by the Louis Marx Company for their HO line of train cars. Model power owns the dies and has been remaking them for years. " THANK YOU MODEL POWER "! These trucks can be found on some A.C. Gilbert ( American Flyer ) cars that were made by Marx for Gilbert. They, thou have a Talgo truck, have been engineered by Marx to operate like a body mounted coupler. If you notice the plastic ring that is on original Marx, Gilbert, and Model Power cars, it limits the movement of the coupler, Controlling the truck from attempting to turn, derailing the car, when run in reverse. So you are looking at what was really is a Non-Talgo truck. * This is something you can, design, and install, to upgrade Tyco, Mantua, Life like, Bachmann, and any other Talgo trucks to operate better in reverse. toptrain

Marx rolling stock seemed heavier and had deeper flanges that also helped them stay on the tracks better than other cars/ rolling stock. One of the circles on the car frame would have carried the MarX, note the big X, logo.

John-
Thanks for the tip. I knew there was some pop-off function involved, just not exactly how to do it without ruining the bolster.
Got both trucks off and the related couplers- I see what you mean by the limited travel of the coupler making it not really a talgo. There is a tiny washer that fits in the coupler hole and the rectangular slot acts as the limiter.
Not really a lot to change- I am giving it all metal wheels, to avoid plastic crud build up, but leaving cheezy whisker coupler there until I get some Kadee whiskers in bulk, as I have a number of Model Power cars with these Mchenry (?) ones.
At any rate, now I can work on the flat car top and I also separated the work caboose cab and the "removeable" tank. This was the Amtrak work caboose model. I am remaking it as either a weed sprayer MOW caboose or a non-potable water tank with hoses for cleaning roadbed messes. You know, like when the manure gondola loses some payload along the tracks, or something like that!
Again, Thanks.
