These KM-4000's are rather sought-after, haven't seen many under 50 on Ebay or at train shows. I managed to score a couple on Ebay that were in an unidentified lot, and a couple at a train show for 25 and 35. Since they're unusual, I had to have some. Here's a LOTW for me.

The 0642 switcher is a Lionel HO piece, made 1961-1962; it's missing a trailing truck as it should be a 2-4-2 and uses the old Hobbyline switcher body on a new chassis sharing drive wheels with the Lionel (former English) 4-6-2. It's nicknamed the "haybird" -

Illustrated assembly instructions at HOSeeker ( three pages beginning here):
http://hoseeker.org/crescent/crescentemc2800pass.jpg
When bought new this kit had a instruction plan to show you how to bend, shape and solder these pieces to get the right profile. According to a friend of mine and his one engine that came with boxes the nose pieces and instructions came in a separate box much like some Varney steam engine kits.
I had an A&B matched set that I sold on eBay a few years ago for ~$20:
http://www.flickr.com/photos/9977705@N05/4750641128/in/photostream/
Therefore, I would venture to say, do what you like with it...it's not worth much! But if you clean it up and polish it, I am sure it will be worth a lot more than what mine sold for. But I think the demand for that particular model is just not quite high enough to make it worth it. I think they are nice pieces, for vintage units.

hi CNVIATyco, I agree with Sean value wise, but if you have a local hobby shop or a local swap meet,or even friends,do not blurt out that you paid $5,avoid giving or putting a price on it,just aim for a trade or credit that you are happy with ken

Sean, You got your self a good one there! It actually looks like an OLD Varney! The style of trucks and gearing says so..... BUT, that would be in question as if the "shell" is brass, I'd bet money it is actually a Varney, so you might have one of those from them, that was a big mass production. (I had a friend what worked for Varney, and I had lost him to old age about 2 years ago, and they had ALOT that was never mass produced, BUT there were items, such as a SP 2-8-8-4, ALONG with a B&O 2-8-8-4, (I know that the wheel arrangement exists, BUT its REALLY crude! I DAMN NEAR bought one on ebay till it went out of price range about 2 months ago! (WAS REALLY tempted!)
So your Veranda, I'd almost say it was a one off, too by Varney, its to close to the type gearing they used on the trucks! Not to mention, that the other "unpowered" trucks, are cast, and not brass!
Question, you know if the shell is cast or is it brass? You might have yourself a real collectors item there! Lucky guy you are! I'd love to get my hands on one of the Veranda Side Turbines, and I don't even model UP!

The cab number gives that thing away as postwar Lionel. Lionel also had a small starter set 2-4-2 and 0-4-0 that has similar boiler and cab lines. I cant find one on the bay where it's facing the same way, but this is what I was thinking of. http://www.ebay.com/itm/Lionel-2-4-2-Steam-Locomotive-Tender-and-Cars-/230813958777?pt=Model_RR_Trains&hash=item35bd958279

Try a quick dip in TARNEX first. I promise you will get faster and better results. I ahve been reusing the same (2) jars for the past couple of years. Results are awesome. Be weary of exposing the solder for too long. That will turn the brass black if kept in too long. A quick dip will loosen up the tarnish and make it mush easier to clean. Afterwards rinse with water and brush it with a brass wire brush.
TARNEX reacts badly with solder and diecast. So if what you want to clean has any of this on it, do not leave it in long. I do a quick dip to get the cleaning started and then do the rest myself by hand. It will turn the brass black if it is let in too long with the diecast or solder. Therefore, soldered brass pieces can be cleaned, but not left in too long. Example: Before: http://www.flickr.com/photos/9977705@N05/5171162293/ After: http://www.flickr.com/photos/9977705@N05/5530658811/in/set-72157625254900663 Plating on drivers and drive rods will disappear if left in too long. Drivers I do not do. Drive rods only for a very very short period of time...maybe ~1-2 minutes with some checking in between. I did the valve gear on the Varney Berkshire this way and then finished it off with my Dremel stainless wire wheel.

While my Greenberg's Guide to Lionel HO doesn't say so, I suspect the 0642 and later versions were an attempt to standardize so that this engine used the same wheels and pilot as the 4-6-2. In that sense it's a combination of Hobbyline and English tooling. Or maybe the tooling for the smaller wheels broke, they were only on the 0602 and the 0642 switchers; the 0602 0-6-0 was 1960 only, the 064 0-4-0T lasted longer but I suspect was made up of parts on hand by the end; I have about five of them. Either way it made for a goofy looking little engine.
If you can get two Tyco V&T Generals that nice for $25, jump on it. I can sell them for $40 all day long, in fact I can get $25 for them in rough shape if the motor runs.

Frank, I have a tender to that locomotive! Same paint and number! (I sort of thought it was a tender to a B&O Camel, NOT a Camelbac k but one of the old Camels.....) Because of the large numbers on it, instead of the "Baltimore & Ohio" lettering!
Nice to know!
