My wonderful, amazing, intelligent- and did I mention lovely- daughter ordered me a great Father's Day gift that arrived today.

It is an Xtronic 4010 soldering station, which comes with 10 various shaped intechangeable tips, the digital heat control power unit where the tool plugs in, a metal resting holder with a sponge, an extra heating element (replaceable), a tweezer, and a great magnifying work light (the top hinges open top use the lens). The sponge that comes with it is a bit small, so I will replace it with a bigger square piece cut from a store-bought one and I need to get some plastic non-skid "feet" for the holder and the power units. Other than that, it is great/ The soldering iron cord is flexible rubber- much more easy to handle that the cheap Radio Shack ones. She got it on Amazon for about 69.98 plus shipping.

There is a more expensive advanced model that has a heat gun attached for shrink tubing, but a box of kitchen matches is more economical.

I had researched a number of these soldering stations on various electronics sites online- such as American Beauty, as one brand I remember, but the prices were way out of my comfort level.

(seeing as how I will be her daily ride to college starting next week, I got a good deal!)

This will make it easier and more fun to work on wiring and mechanical soldering tasks!

Ron, I think she's earned exemption from dog feeding for a good while with that gift.

Just used the soldering station on Friday evening while the "girls" were out shopping. Man, what a difference!

Just not having a clunky standard cord that gets in the way of you using the iron makes it so much easier, and the thing heats up in less than 20 seconds! That needle-like tip is also very precise!

One item- one reviewer/purchaser on Amazon who worked with similar stations in industry pointed out that the digital scale is in Celsius, but provided a low to high numerical range in Celsius for setting the temperature.

The instructions don't mention that. Also, that magnifying lamp is a bit light weight, so I opened the base and added some lead fishing weights with foam tape towards the rear, to make it less tip-prone- big improvement there!

There are over 40 positive reviews of this product on Amazon, and many cite the customer service of the American distributor as being excellent.

I will now gladly continue to feed the dog!
