Does anyone have any ideas for replacement pantograph springs? I'm not necessarily looking for actual Tyco springs, just anything cheap and available that works. Thanks! - Thomas

I was able to replace some springs with a piece of a rubber band. It was one of the wider rubber bands. I cut a strip of it short enough that it would put tension on the pantagraph. I then poked a hole at either end and attached it to the little points that the original springs fit over. Some black paint or a sharpie helps disguise it.

Hope that helps! :)

Cheez, thats a good idea! I would say to use a black sharpie tho instead of paint....... once the paint dries and the rubber band stretches, the paint will A hold up the movement of the rubber band, or B the crack off and flake over the top of the model.....Where the black Sharpie marker won't do either of those issues!

I've used rubber bands for years for "tie downs" as a "strap" and used a sharpie on them for coloring.....

I WILL WARN yopu tho, DO NOT dull cote over the sharpie! it will run down over the model as the dullcote will "thin" and make runny of the marker pigments!

These springs would do it, but they're quite expensive.

Another option is to scrap old electronics, particularly cassette drives and VCRs.

Thanks everyone for your ideas. I will try your rubber band idea Cheez. Scrounging cassettes drives is a great idea too... I hope that I can find a few to open up. In the future with iPods and iPads and such there won't be a lot of opportunities to scrounge mechanical things anymore. - Thomas
