I have found that the cardboard cases that reams of paper come in (12 reams in a case) are almost perfect! You can stack the boxes in there, 5 per layer, in perfect snugness so that they can't slide in one direction, which keeps then square (you might need to pad around the ends to keep them from sliding in the other direction). You can get 6 layers which is also a perfect fit. For a total of 30 boxes.
You can fit the long tri-color loco boxes in there lengthwise, 2 per layer with padding. The short loco boxes also fit. And the short car boxes can be oriented depending on how many you have.
Since paper boxes are fairly easy to come by, you can get a large collection fit into nice, stackable boxes of the same size and shape, which makes storage much easier.
If you're concerned about moisture, you can fit the full paper box into a plastic tub you can get for less than $5 at walmart.
I would NOT keep Tyco boxes loose in plastic tubs alone! The nestable design of plastic tubs means they have angled sides... which is a real PITA when it comes to keeping your boxes stacked and square. Since Tyco used the cheapest, flimsiest clear cellophane in the known universe, this is important!
If you're talking about preserving the boxes while on display... I don't have an answer there.

| cigarettes never used to have as much tar content as they now do,its been added gradually to reduce the tobacco content so as companies can keep their prices competitive, and the by product of this is a sticky substance that will stop parts moving freely and kill idiots like me who buy them ken
