I don't know how many times I have heard or read on other forums people dump on Bachmann products. Having owned a few of their engines in the 80's, I can understand why they developed a really bad reputation for themselves. It does irk me that some folks continue to dog Bachmann without actually trying/ seeing some of their newer "blue box" in action. I gave Bachmann a chance and have found their new product to be exceptional and a great bargain. In my opinion they are the new Athearn bluebox. Thought I would share my Bachmann Roster.

This is one of their newer releases. Paid 70 dollars for it but it comes with DCC on board. An absolute Beauty and by far one of my favorite engines. Though not a big fan of Bachmann DCC (they tend to buzz alot) this is a great running. I plan to add a fer of these to the roster in other livery.

This F-7 unit looks amazing but was a bit of a disappointment. Though it is not a bad runner, it is light and not up to par with other Bachmann F- units in my collection. I have some bachmann plus units that run amazing. Still for 20 bucks, this unit was still a deal.

Another amazing running engine. Super quiet and looks amazing. Paid 35 dollars for this one. Nice detail.

I, too, have developed a good relationship with the current Bachmann engines, as you said the DCC sometimes leaves a bit to be desired, but the ones I have do OK. Just acquired a Western Maryland engine, with DCC, for $25 a few months ago. Very happy with it, Runs quiet and pulls well.

You are right Jerry. Though you still get a lemon once in a while, the new bachmanns are great. I have 2 FM Baby Trainmasters that run amazing. Hard to believe that they are standard line considering the detail and the low speed crawl. When it comes to DCC, I have a GP that runs flat out amaxing and is super quiet. I also have one that growls like crazy. For the price though, I am not complaining.

I too have MANY Bachmann's....Specially the spectrum units, but I have to say the steamers in the Spectrum line has come ALONG way since the "Plus" series in the 1980's.....

As my screen name sugests, my all time favorite:

(I hope all those links work!)

I will say the EM-1 they done will pull a freakin' house! I'm surprised at how well it runs and pulls both in DC cab control, AND DCC and the sound I must say is the best I've heard for a specialized locomotive, altho the whistle could have been recorded differently.

I've got a gauge from Micro-Mark for drawbar pull and its hitting the 8.8 ounce of drag! Thats alotta freight cars! As the passengere train its hauling above is not even one ounce of drag....and the freight trains on either of them is only 2.1 ounce of drag!

Hi EM,

It's hit or miss with Bachmann F-units. The Blue Santa Fe is a nice engine with the frame of the old Bachmann Plus F-units. They run great. The NS and other Santa Fe are lighter all wheel drive engines. Again they run well but no where near the pulling power of the Bachmann plus F units. Maybe this weekend, I will open them up and demonstrate the differences between the 2 engines.

If you are not having fun, you are not doing it right.

Ray,
I figured that it was hit or miss! I thought I'd ask, so the "Plus" models seem to run better or be stronger and all?

Ray,
The FT's used the Bachmann F7 plus Frame and motor.
The new F7's use the Bachmann Plus bodies with a new lower cost frame and motor.
Bachmann took every last ounce of extra metal out of the new F7 frame.
The F7's will run with the other Bachmann standard line units.
That is with a GP-40 and FTA at least.
The new F7 motor pulls more current than the FT's motor.
With more weight added, the new F7's are still a good deal.
Regards,
John

Well the Bachmann plus are the best in my opinion and some of the blue box releases have the plus frame. Here is a video that shows how the inside of a plus engine looks like and how it runs.

Three more Bachmanns, these are of the DCC variety. First up is the new Alco with sound. Amazing runner with amazing sound and great low speed control. One fothe cheaper sound locomotives out there.

Another great running DCC equipped Loco. No buzz and great low speed control.

Finally a dcc equipped but super noise little switcher that screams at low speeds.
