This is one of the advertisers for Railpictures.net. They are very nicely done and would fool a lot of train experts. There is a related article in the current Model Railroader except they're using photographs in the magazine.

I liked the idea from MR and went a step further (sillier?) using google maps, my printer, and some foam board....

I'm gonna add some more detail to it (drainpipes, and a ROOF) and Miles of Tiles will be another industry on the Pacific Electric (circa 1991) New Havana branch

just me Ray... and just because I have Tyco doesn't mean I am not a model railroader

I haven't printed buildings yet, but I have used Google street view to get pictures for a backdrop. Here I printed pics of houses along Shafter Ave. in Oakland, CA. Prior to 1957, the Sacramento Northern had street trackage along Shafter and the neighbors had to deal with freight trains and steeple cab locomotives in their street. Today it looks just like any other residential street in the Bay Area.

How do you print anything larger than 8 1/2 x 11

You can get Google street view when you click on the street view "man" in Google maps.

Then I screen capture the house in the center of the photo, move down the street a bit, and capture the next house, and so forth.

Then I stitch the screen captures together in photoshop, scale the photo, and print them out as 8.5 x 11 sheets. I print the sheets with some overlap, which I carefully cut away. Then I paste the sheets to the wall with dry-flat book paste.

It's all a lot of work, but it's still faster than painting.

There is actually another step that I do, that is, I apply a "watercolor" filter to the photos to make them look like they were painted and not so photo-like. A happy side effect of this is that it reduces the detail on the backdrop. I want viewers to focus on the trains, not the backdrop. Hopefully they will come away with the impression that the trains are more detailed than everything else.

That's about the same thing I did for miles of tiles only difference is I just glued it to foam board after cutting it, my layout isn't super bright and from the distance it "looks" 3 d as the picture shows, not a bad thing when you need a unique building/ false front

I don't have photo shop, costs money but use Picassa.

I'll give it a try.

got to get my color printer to print black. Right now set on B & W and not sure how to change

thanks again
