Another great find at the Timonium, MD show was this Champion Southern engine by AHM, I am building a NASCAR consist, so far hadn't found the perfect engine, but I think this one will do nicely.

After seeing pictures of Illinois Terminal engines, I had to have one. An interesting shortline from home, with a quirky paint scheme (silver roof with green fans?!? Awesome! ), would make great run-through or secondhand power on the Saint Canard Midland. Trouble is, for ocaasional use, I didn't want to fork over the $100+ for Atlas and Athearn engines.
From the "Making Do With Less" Department, a Life-Like GP38-2 to the rescue:

Illinois Terminal is one of the rarer paint schemes LifeLike did, and unusual by any measure. Its road number is the year my eldest daughter was born, so that's a nifty bonus too. Still, it didn't cost much on ebay. The LL GP38 has a lot of shortcomings but you can tweak them. The biggest issue is the chunky handrails. To fix them, I cut off the extra material below the sills. For the horribly squared one by the nose steps, I removed the horizontal section between the first two "posts" and bent the leading one into an angle, joining the fist post to the second at the bottom, on the step well. It's not perfect, but is a definite improvement and daresay even looks plausible. I cleaned up some flash and other bits too.
Turning to paint, I painted the fuel tank, air tanks, horns, window frame, class lights, and headlight assembly silver to match the prototype. I also touched up the edges of the silver roof, the black walkways, and added the yellow step edges. Some quick dry-transfer numberboards add a finished touch. Lastly, I painted the air intakes for some basic weathering, and used an india ink wash on the trucks to bring out the detail. Splashed some ink on the fuel tanks for weathering too.
I body-mounted kadee couplers and will fill the pilots in the future. Might add some other details and weathering, but it looks better already.

Here is the newest addition to my unnamed, unbuilt system. It's an AHM 0-4-0 docksider (c16a), painted for the B&O, and in pristine asthetic condition. Bought it for an okay price at the local flee market, it has been the jewel of my hunt of garage sales, ebay and every listing on craigslist.
Only problems are that she has a little bit too much eccentricy on the driver's side valve gear. Oh, and she ain't got a motor!
Any help in how to adjust the ecentricies, or aquire a suitable motor and worm would be nice. Sorry to break the diesel trend today, but seeing as how I'm still listed as a "switcher" on these forums, I'd figure I'd post to match my title.

NICE Rivarossi B&O C-16, (The C-16A was the "Docksider" of the same engine, just rebuilt!)
HOWEVER, I have a factory motor for that and for the ecentric adjustment, merely remove the bolt holding the ecentric crank on, and then push inward on the stem the bolt turns into and turn it till the flat edges are at about 10 past on a claock which is about 15 degrees. the right side of the locomotive should be 10 past BEHIND the axle, and the left side should be 10 past on the clock FORWARD of the axle! Ken, Nope! I'm heartattach serious! I paid $60.00 for that ALCO Models, brass 0-6-0! It needs a can motor as I'm not fond of the old open frame DC-90's which runs pretty loud, needless to say!
I take it you seen the posting of the Brass B&O EM-1, 2-8-8-4 I posted all the progress pictures of? I got a whooping $100.00 in cash and a trade of a BLI Blue Line 2-8-2 for it!
know, I'ma turd!
I don't "look" for deals like that, they seem to fall into my lap......what am I to say? "No" not likely to happen, with me anyway!

Ken, That 0-8-0 brass brute you posted the pictures of, looks like an old Akane, is it?
I have a few brass locomotives myself, I got my big Akane B&O EM-1, 2-8-8-4, as well as a Brass Akane B&O Q-4b 2-8-2, the Alco Models USRA 0-6-0 (which will be a B&O #350, when done!), and then I have a AB Austin 4-2-4, CP Huntington (which is for sale!)........Then I have multiple brass tenders as well, at some point I plan to get pictures of them onlinee so......Be on the look out for them!

Also, I'm not sure what all roadnames I may have as I'd have to again, look! I'll let you know what I have when I get a chance to look after work one day this week, as I'm preparing for a train show this weekend so....... God, only knows what I'll come home with!

Thanks Justin! I got another one I have to get pictures of.....a Akane B&O Q-4b, 2-8-2.....Nice loco, needing alittle less work then Kens 0-8-0 pictured above! Runs GREAT, but I'm not certain I entertain the use of a DC-90 open frame motor tho.....Which I'll probaby end up replacing!

This is my LOTW:
It is a HO Scale 1949-1950 Sampson rail car called the Silver Bullet. It is the bottom engine in the photo. This one is the 1950 version due to having 2 windows on the pilot nose piece. The 1949 had 4 windows:

Sean, THAT is an AMAZING set! I'd LOVE to find, JUST the engine! it make a GREAT B&O #50 prototype actually!
Where in the world, did you find that one?
The center car, looks like an OLD Athearn/Glode RDC.........Does the ends of that car, separate from the sdes and frame sections? As if it does, thats a Globe model.....UNLESS the comapny that made that Silver Bullet, were using old Globe parts to build the train as so many manufactures done way back when to get specific models!

Thanks Ken! I kind of figured it was there. I just can not seem to find the time to sort through his site!
Cool reference. I posted a link to it on the flickr image I have posted of this locomotive.
The middle unit is a early Athearn/Globe RDC diesel unit. I must have 10-15 or more of these early all metal versions. Yes, the ends are separate pieces.
The top unit is a chrome plated E7-E9 dummy B unit. It appears to pre-date Hobbytown and has a resin fibre board chassis. I am giving it to a friend who has a very thorough library of early and vintage HO. He is going to try to figure out who made it. He is the one who told me about the Sampson originally. He has the 1949 version.

Sean, I'd be interested in the most bottom unit for the state in my last reply as it be a REALLY good starting point for the B&O #50 gas motor car!
Let me know if its up for grabs!
