Short of drilling out the rivets, what can be done to a redbox-era MU-2 to get some of the old oil, grease, dirt, etc., out of it? Could I submerge the truck assembly in alcohol or will that just make things worse? Also, where are the appropriate spots to oil/grease?

Thanks in advance!

DaCheez, the rivets can be drilled out and ya can re-tap the holes for screws. I imangine any screw over 2-56 shall work. Ya can dunk that whole motor in alcohol and have no issues. I've done this in the past with no issues once everything has dried. Oil the motor bearings and oil the axles. Then, grease up the gears. I have a hoard of those Phase 1 MU-2's. Never have had one that's never ran! Just scrub everything and let it soak. Anyways, I can always supply back up motor parts. Brushes, etc.

just REMEMBER, if you drill out the rivets to take it apart, you MUST have a "keeper" across the Alnicol magnet,or it will likely lose it's charge. You can buy a set of those permanent button magnets, I did that to one MU-2, and man it takes OFF and runs! Mainly because I wanted to see what would happen to one of those magnets if I took it apart. It's hard to degrease those things with them all riveted together, it is possible to clean it up and re-oil it if you're very careful and patient, as Justin said. Just takes patience as there's no room to work in there.

Cheez, I've never drilled any out. I just soak them in 90% alcohol, then brush it out. Pipe cleaners are good for getting into tight spaces. Contact cleaner is even better for blasting out gunk.

Justin,
I am new so I can't PM you.
I read here that you can supply brushes and other parts. I would like to acquire some mu-2 brushes and brush spring wires. Please let me know if you can supply these and what the cost is.
Thanks

I have drilled out the rivets to take the good armature and put it in a already modified MU2 bogey where the armature had gone bad. I only took it apart as a last resort.
