As soon as I get the right Mantua 0-4-0Shifter, I wanna kitbash it in a 2-4-2. What trailing/lead truck could I use thats short enough for the already short frame? I was looking at some MDC trail/lead trucks. Also, would the valve rods that yard bird trains has for the Prairie, Shifter and Big 6, could it be modified to fit an 0-4-0 Shifter?

Just look for mantua pilot/trailing trucks like from a 2-6-2 and try that. Why would u modify the rods? They already fit

Do not use the standard Mantua 4-6-2 trucks as they are too long. Here is what I have done in the past; I have used the Athearn Little Monster 0-4-2 trailing trucks and a cut down Athearn Genesis 2-8-2 pilot & trailing trucks. The trailing trucks were a little large and required a significant amount of grinding of the Mantua chassis but worked well when done. Examples below:
Little Monster trailing & Genesis pilot truck / 1 Genesis pilot deck Parts:

Genesis trailing & Genesis pilot truck / 2 Genesis pilot deck Parts:

A kitbash I acquired that is really neat and a 2-4-4 to boot!

The Athearn / Mantua kit bashes I did myself and the total time for each was less than 4 hours on each, start to finish. I started with shifters that already had broken off steps and ground the original pilots down uuntil they were stubs/tabs that I could mount the replacement / extended Athearn pilot decks & steps to. I sold each on eBay. The first sold I think for ~$50 and the other sold for $110 some two years apart. I have plans to make more.

Personally I think you should use 2 athearn 2-8-2 pilot wheels, the booster you showed looks a little weird with that trailing truck. keep the same wheels on pilot on trailing

Since I did both, I have to say, yes, Athearn, but the Little Monster trailing truck looks the best. It actually has a thin small frame and was designed to fit under a smaller locomotive. The trailing trucks without an external frame look kind of funny if you ask me.

I think most Columbia types had trailing trucks with inside bearings.
