Refreshed Oct 25th, 2009. Since we have a lot of new members on here--anybody remember this store. This car came from the Charlotte NC store back in the 80's at the FREEDOM Mall. The mall still exists but the store is long gone and is now a County Government center.

Does anyone else have this car? This store existed back in the early 80's and use to carry a huge selection of life-like scenery-locos and a large selection of tyco which is where i bought most of mine. they also carried Bachmann but very little. This car was done by life-like and has sliding doors

Cool Car! Never seen one before and never heard of The Toy Store. Guess they didn't have them in my area growing up (St. Louis).

Brian-

What a cool piece! I love those local, one-off pieces that are a material culture remain of a business long gone!

Although I grew up in Greensboro, NC- just up I-85- but I don't remember that as a franchise in Greensboro, Winston, High Point, Raleigh, Wilmington, or even Cary.

However, there is a store located in Atlanta that may have been related at one time... http://www.thetoystoreusa.com/sell.html

The '80s had lots of little mom and pop shops. Then, George H. W. Bush and Bill Clinton raised taxes... and companies began to buy each other out to survive- or went bust. Yes, there are some smaller, regional franchises... but not as many these days as in the '80s.

Perhaps contacting the mall would help you find more about the store. From there, you could find out what happened.

Thanks for your info. I don't think this store was just a Charlotte store and i believe the link you provided is the original store headquarters. In 1984 -- i was only 12. This was the coolest toy store. I wish it were still around as they would probably still carry Life-Like products as well as Bachmann. They didn't carry any - or little of Bachmann that i can remember but all of Life - Like and Tyco train accessories and the US 1 trucking line-they had all of Tyco's other racing sets and accessories also. I can also remember they had the largest selection of Matchbox /Hotwheels / Pocket cars / and Majorette vehicles around. They carried every one made by the manufacturers. My mom would take me once a week - usually on saturdays over there for a minimum of an hr
