I stopped at a LHS and found these Rapido cars that I have been looking for. They are mint in their Brown Boxes. I always thought these were only available in the Red Boxes...

The number after the "123x:" portion is the suggested retail price in USC (US Cents). This is why that number would change from year to year, but it was not always consistently applied.
Interesting that the observation cost a full 20% more than the other two. That piece of wire on the roof must have been plated silver!
Based on the style of text on the flap label, I would guess these were made in 1971 or 72. If you look at one of the dogear flaps inside the box, you might see a printed gear with 12 teeth and a number. The number is the year the box was printed, the dot signifies the month (by the corresponding clock position). Notice the key distinction "when the box was printed"... I imagine many boxes could be ordered, and not stamped or filled for a while. But hopefully close enough.
This only works with boxes printed by Diamond Box in Philadelphia. The reboxes used a similar dating system with a diamond instead of a gear.
