I finally got one of these and curious on how it works! Anyways, here's a link to what I won on eBay:
http://www.ho-scaletrains.net/tycoactionaccessories/id81.html
It says its a non-electrical operating, yet, I'm confused! How well does it work and actually load logs? I have 4 log cars made for the Tyco log dumps and finally have a chance to load and unload them!

I think the plunger is a pump & it pushed the dozer up the ramy to load the logs

I have one and have it on display. It is air operated. I'd imagine you have to develop your touch to load one at a time if you put all three logs on the ramp.

The log loader is one of my favorite accessories. It basicaly works off air. Like Alco Fan said 'you have to develop a touch'. The harder, or faster you push down on the plunger then the faster the bulldozer will push the logs up the ramp. the little air pump is stronger than you may think. This was one of the first action acessories I purchased and I'll be damned if when I opened the box the gondola was a Union Pacific. I was really looking forward to seeing that bright yellow 'Pine Hill" gondola in there. I assume the factory ran out and supplemented it with the UP gon. I was dissapointed so I picked up a Pine Hill gon from evilBay that was NIB and replaced that UP gon. I got really spolied with the US-1 Electric trucking log loader because it is electric and really is nice. I really wish Tyco would have went with the electric loag loader and pipe loading crane like what came in the US-1 sets instead of going with the manual accsessories for their HO scale trains.

Are there two versions of the US-1 log loader? The one I have is what I guess you'd call a direct drive operation. The truck backs in and on to some rollers. The truck stops, but remains running on the rollers. These rollers then drive the dozer to push the logs (all in one shot) up the ramp. The dozer doesn't back down the ramp on it's own the way the Pine Hill dozer does, so the US-1 has to be pushed back down when a fresh load of logs are put in front of the dozer. I think that the Pine Hill dozer is also bigger in size and the ramp is bigger too. I may have to dig both out to compare, but I seem to recall the two accessories being alike in idea only.

Come to think of it, the US-1 pipe loading crane is similar to the log loading dozer. Truck backs in, and it takes the spinning wheels to make the crane go. This crane and the pipes are also smaller than the train version that came in the Golden Eagle set.
I want to even go out on a limb and say the US-1 versions of these accessories all operate poorly too. Maybe a combination of age and not-new truck tires have caught up with mine. Even when new in the 80's, I seem to remember only the bare basic US-1 accessories working as they should.
