Hi All,
My Fiance gave me another box of goodies yesterday . One of the items in there was a LifeLike Northern Pacific EMD GP engine. It says LifeLike on the bottom of the fuel tank. I have never seen a base line LifeLike with this much detail. Could it be a Proto 1000-2000? How can you tell if it's a 1000 or 2000? Also it has a couple of cracked gears. Are they available through Walthers?
Thanks Mike

That's a Life-Like Proto 200 GP-18 or late phase GP-9. They are very nicely detailed, have a pair in D&RGW similar to your NP example.
The cracked axle gears are very, very typical of these drives. Don't know for certain, but I believe Walthers will respond with replacement axles to correct the split plastic ones you've got now. Also, the Athearn axles will work in there too. Athearn sells a bag of 12 or so axles for like $20. I've bought those and gone through fixing my bad Proto locos.
The bottom plastic cover snaps off the trucks, be careful doing that as they can crack/break. The geared wheel axles lift out and you slide the new ones in and snap the truck cover back on and you've got a good runner again.
You can always tell a busted axle on these Proto drives by the repeated clunking sound and rough ride they'll give when the axles get cracked.
