My 3 PT steamers (2-8-0, 0-8-0 X2) finally came in. The Clementine was in better shape than expected! Now, the fun..... The Powertorque was worn out the commutor had a orange glow til I cut it off! Then, while doin' PT swap (my easier ones), I found these shavings from the axle journals! Now, I've seen corroded, crack and bust blocks, never one PT like this one!Maybe I'll get a video of it!

Ha ha, this could be a fun contest... who has the absolute crappiest failed PT... and who has the crappiest that runs?
I have a PT whose block swelled and cracked in a manner that defies description... it's almost as it it "balooned out". It warped and cracked the plastic gimbal rings which couldn't be turned as a result. Came out of a Midnight Special Shark, IIRC.

I had one a few months ago I fired up, it was literally BLAZING on fire while running, I think it had some steel wool caught on the armature, it was pretty fun to watch. But I didn't run it long. I think it was already toasted, so I didn't even bother to try to fix it at that point.

You should have taken a video of that...... Then take it with the lights out.
PT motors are one of the worst products Tyco/Mantua ever made......

I always get a chuckle when I see an advertisement for "Locomotive with smoke" like a Bachmann, for example. I had a smoking locomotive: it was a TYCO C630. Set it on the track and opened the throttle. Smoke rolled out from under the sides of the cab. A real smoking locomotive.
Unspoken expectations are premeditated failures.

Interesting, Tony. I've never seen a PT with zinc rot. It seems like later Tyco had tighter QC in that regard, but I guess everyone could end up with a bad batch of metal.

The horror!

Yeah... check out all the hairline cracks, and it's like literally bursting at the edges and seams... never quite saw pest like this.
I was going to make a "trophy" out of it using this huge bolt. For kitbahsing insanity and general screwyness. George Bennett gave me the idea (and the bolt, LOL)

Very funny, Tony. Although isn't a trophy supposed to commemorate some sort of achievement? A PT and zinc rot are neither.
I've seen that type of cracking before in the old Rivarossi C-Liner trucks... very common. Many don't disintegrate, they just craze along the edges and swell a bit.
Anyone ever seen an MU-2 truck with zinc pest?

I'd give it as a trofy in the katigory of "dishonorable demention" Pun intended!
John
I don't have a one track mind. It depends on the turn-out. "I love your catenary!" Is that a power-trip or just another pick-up line?

That's definitely a "rotter", Tony. Wow. Never seen that on any of the PT motor housings I have, either. Pretty ugly, but I like your DD trophy idea. The " You're Screwed " award.

impurities in the metal itself. Over time, because of the dissimilarities in the impurities and the magnesium itself, the metal crystalizes and starts cracking. Probably due to different expansion rates when temperature changes, the metals then expand and contract at slightly different rates, causing the cracking.
