Hi Everyone
i have been a long time lurker here since 2009 and i think its time to introduce myself. My name is Tony ,47 yeas old, married with 3 great kids.I live in the city of Adelaide ,South Australia. I started in the mid 70s with my brother and our first train was the Durango Kansas set of which very little is left.As youngsters, we bought tyco chattanooga gp20,f7 spirit of 76(austrian made), chessee f7 a+b and lots of tyco accessories. Also bought a jouef diesel. When the children came along we pulled our set out of mothballs, divided it up and built our own 8x4 sets telling our wives it was for the children.I love my old trains and over the last few years have discovered mantua trains ,aquiring 3 old pacifics ,040 shifter,tyco/mantua a+b f7,tyco chattanooga 080 steamer all of which need lots of tinkering.Ive also bought more jouef diesels, lifelike diesels and a proto 2000 e6 loco. Parts usually come from limited swap meets locally or from the US.
Great forum, lots of info and many interesting people. Thanks for listening and if i get my daughter to show me how to use the camera and post on the forum, i hope to show some of the trains.

Welcome from " up over", Tony, I'm in the Washington, DC, USA area ( home to all the hot air you could ever want ). Glad to hear from someone else from South of the Equator. One question I'd like to have answered is that I have a vintage Tyco Dealer service manual from 1974, and it shows Australian Mantua engines with larger, pyramid-type weights, rather than our US squarish kind. if your daughter will so kindly train you to take some pictures and post them ( little silver camera icon on far right of Format, 2nd line in posting window ), I'd like to see what one of these weights looks like instead of just a drawing.
I also have a single jouef engine, haven't ever tried it yet, how do they run/compare to Mantua engines? Similar quality? Anyway, look forward to more posts from you on your childhood trains.

Greetings from the USA. I'm not to far from Jerry as the crow flies, but far enough from all the blather he warned about :)

It's always interesting to hear from Tyco fans in other parts of the globe. There was another one from Australia here a few years back who had some interesting info. Glad you could dig out your old sets and have fun with them again... that's what they were made for :)

I've always been curious... if you can recall, how well did the Tyco sets go over down there in general? I imagine all the US roadnames and product "billboard" cars might have raised a few eyebrows, but there's a surprising amount for sale on Australia's ebay site. I have been trying to complete a collection of the Australian roadnames that Tyco made... NSW, QR, nnd VR... I only need one or two items but they tend to be elusive.

Anyway, welcome at last, and glad you're enjoying the hobby...

The OFFICIAL TCF Shaygetz's Recruiting Incentive Program!

I second it, and offer my share of doughnuts to all & sundry. Not my kind of food, and besides, ask Nelson; recent events have kind of put me off doughnuts!

Your NSW shell uses the same type of motor as the Chattanooga unit, but you can make the earlier style motors work also, depending on the mount. If you have trouble sourcing parts I do have a few spares I can send across the big pond - haven't done that yet :)

Interesting that they advertised on TV there?! Wow. There are a handful of the US ads on youtube, but they're almost embarrassingly cheesy

I like your Jouef diesels. I've long wanted something like the middle and right units, they remind me of old Winnebago RV's and I'd love to paint one as such...

Yeah, I'm odd like that...

Hi guys,
Hi Tony, The 2 jouef diesels i bought from a hobby shop in adelaide several years ago. These were very old stock sitting around for a long timeand i picked them up for about $20 each(they were trying to move stock)but they were never used.
I do remember well tyco products being stocked in department stores. Tyco must have felt there was a market in australia because they made 4 items under aussie roadnames aimed at that market.
The VR caboose i picked up for $3 at a local swap meet. (the original box was rough but the caboose looks brand perfect.

will add some more photos

REMEMBER GUYS - THE 70S WERE GOOD MAN

I picked these up at swap meet. They need work.

future projects. Mantua pacific, 0-4-0 shifter and i think 1987 onwards tyco chattanooga 0-8-0.

Tony. Thanks for offer on parts .If i need i will contact you.
