While wandering a Dollar Tree store this week,I picked up a white cutlery tray, and thought Hmm, looks the right size. So, what the hey, I bought one. Thought it might fit HO scale stock. Lo and behold, it does! Pretty nicely, too. Not quite high enough to clear the horns on the diesels or the super-liner, they stick above it about 1/4 inch or more, so stacking them will be an issue, but for the price, I can put these in my dell "pizza boxes" and get them separated nicely. Here's a pic of my PC area clean-up using one -

Not perfect or ideal use of space, but for the money, one of the most economical solutions I've seen so far. At $1 each, it won't break the bank, either.

| Actually...not a bad idea...Dado slots into a vertical unit and you could slide them into the slots like drawers. That would cover any height issues...

My biggest weakness is lack of woodworking equipment to do just that. I have tools to deal with metal, but working with wood beyond a circular saw, jigsaw, sabersaw, table saw, etc. to do specialized cuts makes it hard for me to work with wood. And I don't have the space for large woodworking tools. What I COULD do, is since I have plenty of right-angle aluminum ears for computer equipment, is to screw those to wooden sides and slide them in that way. Somewhere I have bundles of right-angle aluminum which I could use to make something like you suggest. Glad you brought that up!
