Back in '88 I was taking a load through Amish country, the night was black as ink, and I was juggling a road atlas on my knee whizzing along a two lane highway and came to a railroad bridge marke 12'6 and my trailer was 13'6. I barely had time to brace for the impact and went under and the sound of compressed air was like a sonic boom. I guess they gave thirteen inches extra allowance on the clearance sign. A few more close calls like this an figured I was not cut out to be a trucker.

That bridge is only a couple hours drive from where I live; I may have to take a road trip sometime.

| We have one of these in Zanesville. Hard to beLIEve how many trucks hit this bridge even with lights and signs, and a deeper pass to one side of it!!!

I notice that a lot of these are at the bottom of a dip so that if the truck is at all long, its wheels will be higher than the road directly under the bridge while some part of the truck is under the bridge. If they measure from the road directly under the bridge, the driver had better leave a few inches extra or he might lose his top anyway.

Seems obvious, but after mega hours behind the wheel my brain would go numb and I wouldn't notice a lot of obvious things. In truck driving school, back in '88, they showed us a film (not a video, but an actual film) of all the stupid mind sets a driver could find himself in. In short order, I could have played the starring role. Glad I got out when I did; the odds were not in my favor; I just wasn't cut out for it.
