While digging thru the under-table boxes yesterday, I ran across this pair of powered Lionel trucks, with DC motors. Apparently there is an ac/dc transformer on the item to convert the power to DC to run these. I hooked them up, and one works fine, the other is a bit slow and jerky. Not sure what I will do with these yet, but at $5 for the pair, I decided to bring them home for a future project.

i'm pretty sure they do get the voltage turned from ac to dc. they also use a different electronic e-unit as well.
