my first train was a tyco Chattanooga Choo Choo set. i think i got it around 1976 or 1977. i still have most of it. the engine was a 0-8-0 that was hell for a 5-6 year old boy to keep running. i bet we sent it off for replacement 4-5 times. it had the baby ruth box car that had the roller wheel in it that made the chuff chuff sound. i don't know what happened to it. that's the one that started it all for me. i remember we couldn't watch tv & run the train at the same time because it made the tv picture snowy & blurry.

| We've probably discussed this in years past, but it's nice to recollect--Mine was a 1969 red-box Tyco set from Sears with Santa Fe GP-20, Swift reefer, coal dump gondola, Santa Fe TOFC set, GN flat with pipes, and Santa Fe caboose. I still have the original box, and the search to re-create the set led to my current hobby of collecting Tyco.

What's a "train ass?" Do you mean a caboose?

| I bet that Dublo set is worth a bit more than originally, Ken. On the other hand, I guess it would have been quite a premium product in its day.

I received a Lionel set in 1960, and enjoyed it for a few years, but then, as I discovered a real model railroad hobby shop downtown (Mpls), I found out about the more realistic HO scale, so I begged my Dad for an HO train set, and in 1964, received my first Athearn set for Christmas. I promptly went to that shop after the holiday and purchased my first Athearn BB car kit- an SP flat car with stakes. That Athearn had a Santa Fe blue-and-yellow F7, a New Haven boxcar among others. And after that, it was my hobby for life.....

Tyco Santa Fe F7 with dummy and various cars in the late 70s was my fist set. I don't recall it actually having a name though.

My first train was the ubiquitous Lionel set, I was 3 years old in 1963 when I got it. I have some old pics of me at Christmas running it around the floor. I still have the set, safely stored away in my upstairs storage. it was a 2-4-2 steam engine, with submarine car, exploding box car, I think a hopper, missle car, and a brown caboose. My second train was HO, but it was not a set, I think I just started collecting HO pieces individually on sale after Christmas in the '70s, when everything was marked way down for clearance. I was still into trains up to about 18 years old, then slowly automobiles took over my life for many years, starting with my first 1957 Chevy 4-door sedan. I still played with trains, but only occasionally, wasn't until I bought a house in 1999 that I started bringing out my train interests again since I now had some space to work and play with them. Finding a local club helped me get back into them big time, plus the invention of Ebay in the late '90's helped me find more and more interesting train cars I missed in my early life. My train collection has exploded in the last few years, gone from 20-30 pieces from when I moved into the house, to probably well over several hundred now. I haven't even inventoried all I have, as they're so spread out. But anyway, still having fun, even after 48 years....

When I was 2 I got an AF #307 set. I still have it. In the 60's I got a Tyco 0-4-0 PRR Loco, a MStL Lionel Hustler, Tyco F7 Rio Grande and a Tyco GP-20 Burlington Red/White/Grey.
Then the Aurora Slot Car craze hit.

And for all the kidding from others over the years, we are still at it, aren't we!
Not everyone can point back to a youthful memory that laid down a pattern for life, but these days, it's one of the best blood pressure medicines ever created. There's nothing like a few hours spent on the workbench or layout, unless you folks come to Florida and sit on the beach listening to the waves on the shore...

Update, 2nd post - Here's a picture of me around 1974? , with my HO train on the floor. Only place big enough to hold even a loop, I had the baby room, it was cramped.

I don't think I have a digital pic of me yet with my Lionel set, I'll have to find the photo or 35MM slide to do that.

My first set was a President's Choice set back in 2000. I still have it all...I guess that's not terribly impressive though since it was only 11 years ago Here's the engine:

Geez, Jerry- I had those exact same eyeglasses in 1964 at 10 yrs of age- by 1974, I was a cooler dude on active duty with wire rims, until I convinced a Navy optometrist to give me contact lenses, and then I really learned what being a sailor was all about!
Seriously, I have a picture from 1966 with me holding an HO model with my cousin- those glasses I wore advertised the fact that I watched Star Trek and played with trains!
Just don't think I will share that old 1966 photo with you guys, though!

It's a little noisier than it used to be and has a couple of small paint chips, but other than that it held up quite well It's a 4-6-2 Pacific made by Mehano for President's Choice (a Canadian food chain). PC has stopped selling their Christmas train sets in the last few years
