I posted the loco with the shell on in LotW but I thought the old motor and the huge flywheeles were interesting.

If I wanted to get better electrical pick-up how do I solder wires to the trucks. It ran good at the shop but is erratic on the layout

I will say that the gold can motors from the 70's are better then the solid magent motor. Or try a A-Line motor. The gold can motor should easily adapt. After the wiring job is done, better lighting and DCC is plausible. Model Railroader had an article in the DCC Corner talking of this new wiring schematic, adding LED's with a custom made light holder and adding a DCC chip.

Before I checked back I soldered one wire to the front truck tower lead and one from the same point to the rear one. It worked right away but stalled and the short indicator came on. Ken and Justin thanks for your help. The original Athearn conntact runs from the top of the motor to the front and rear trucks. I see the diagram but wonder why the 2 wire method won't work too? What am I missing in my thinking?
