Hello All--I just received two can motors from Yardbird Trains that I will use to re-motor a Mantua Shifter and another loco. Haven't decided on the other one yet, but the new motor has the 'worm flywheel', so it will need to go in a larger loco, probably my UP Gray Pacific. I'll let you all know how it went, with pics hopefully. Anyone else have experience/tips for this? Thanks, Chris

Hi Chris,
I remotored an 0-4-0T booster with the 'worm flywheel' motor and it works great! My only tip is to shim the motor up a bit if the worm is on the gear too tight. I used a small piece of plain paper and that was just enough for the mesh to be perfect.

| Thomas, Did you have to modify the shell at all to fit it in? I was under the impression that the worm-fly would not fit in a Shifter or Booster. That's why I got the motor sans worm-fly for that loco.

I right now am powering a Tyco chatanuga cho cho. I got it acouple of days ago with some other trains. It is a standard tyco 2-8-0. for a tender it had a MDC Vanderbuilt. It was used as a tail end Charlie pretending to be a pusher. It worked well as one. I have cleaned up the engine. Got rid of the Nickoteen. And am powering the frame in a standard way. Sound like somthin else for "Watz Go'in on".

Chris, yes I used a dremel tool to grind the loco weight so there was enough clearance for the fly-worm. It only took about half-an-hour of grinding to get the job done.
I'll post a picture later so you can see what I did.
Toptrain, that 2-8-0 sure looks nice with a vandy tender!

| Ok, Last night I received the motors from Yardbird. They are nice motors, and arrived very quickly from Dan at Yardbird. I installed the non-flywheel motor in my metal shifter, and while it had a slower starting speed, operation still wasn't what I expected (not much better than the open frame. I then removed it and put it in my plastic-body shifter, and it did seem to improve its operation quite a bit. The motor is so free-wheeling, though, that on slight downgrades, the loco noticeably speeds up. The locos were in good shape, and not binding before I started. I'm wondering if the only good way to go is to use a flywheel. I may go ahead and grind out my Shifter and try the worm-fly motor. Or I may just face the fact that Shifters won't give me the performance I'm looking for. It's odd that my Boosters (non-tender) are some of my best runners. It must be because of all that weight on the drivers. I've also noticed that the tender pickup on Tyco/Mantuas never does the greatest job. I usually clean them well and add a bit of extra weight in them. But a way to see the problem is to press down on the tender and notice how much extra current is making it to the motor.

Toptrain, can you do a clinic on repowering your 2-8-0? I'm rather intrigued by how you did yours.
just me Ray... and just because I have Tyco doesn't mean I am not a model railroader
