So, now that I am home from the ME, I finally got around to my other repower project A while back I needed a 70 tonner and picked up an extra drive chassis.
Well the original worked but now I had a chassis with no shell Digging through my project box I came across one of my tender drive 0-8-0s and did some thinking This turned out to be a fast weekend project:
First off remove the old tender drive and tender (cut the wires to the loco) I guesstimated the center and added mounting blocks shown here:

Only thing done to the 70/44 ton drive was remove a light:
Installed unit, next I'll solder the loco wires and connect and test...maybe later this week...
More to come soon....

Excellent! Ingenious. That 70 tonner drive mechanism is very versatile in the kitbashing realm.
My brother did something very similar. He used the frame and drive mechanism from an Athearn switcher and put it under a tender. I think it was a Clementime also. Runs great. Looks good with some custom detail parts matching the particular roadname his was modeling.
Unspoken expectations are premeditated failures.

Hey NCS, your signature sounds like something a conductor on the always late Carolinian Would say! I just now realized that. And ingenious that idea is!

you talking the tyco tender units or the bachmann drive?
one thing I have found out, the Bachmann drived are real light, I have to find and add some more weight in the tender, but it's geting there...

well then the 70 tonner or the 44 tonner is the way to go,
I picked up both at a swap meet (one complete, but a burned out motor, the other just the drive itself with no shell) and it only sent me back @$25

Hey rgcw5;
Yoou should now tackle the ole Irv Athearn original 4-6-2 which was supposed to have a Hi-F powered tender power.
It should prove a challenge.
One of the things Ilike aboutthe tender drive is you can put several different steamers in front of it!
