I moved to this part of the forum, as it probably represents more closely what I have started to do with my inventory of flea market misfits.

Last time, I mentioned I had moved the project into the paint shop, and tonight, I just finished the center cab paint work. I initially primed the shell with Walmart Colormate Gray. The lower deck was painted with Rustoleum red auto primer, which comes out as a darkish red. I used it on a Tichy modern steel water tank structure last year, as that color mimicked what I saw online in search of steel water tanks as used by the GN in the upper Midwest. I then used engine black to detail the arch bar and the springs on each side "skirt" of the lower deck, as well as the wheel faces which are fairly well hidden behind that plastic fascia.

The center cab portion of the shell was painted with this same Rustoleum color, but I had to do 2 coats, as the first one pooled a bit along the bottom side edge of the cab ( my error ), which I then allowed to dry last weekend, before lightly sanding that area with 400 wet dry paper, then reshot the cab where I sanded it tonight.

On the way to this point, I discovered that the el cheapo masking tape I use for structures, the blue duck painters tape from Walmart, was too coarse for the fine masking needed for diesel detail painting. Then I got some el cheapo number 2 tape at Hobbytown ( the franchise chain), but it was not good either. Another trip to Hobbytown resulted in a purchase of the Model Masters tape, which at $8 a very small roll, is used carefully and sparingly, with the el cheapo number 2 tape then covering behind that for larger areas to be masked.

This brought up another issue of cutting tape cleanly, particularly where small pieces are required. That ended up with my purchase of a glass cutting mat at Michael's Crafts, for $12.98, which is a great investment for cutting precisely with no ragged edges. I discussed this in the loose ends area of the forum recently.

I am letting the first final paint coverage of the cab center portion set up for several days, until the coming Friday, as we have had varying humidity levels lately here in FL as we trend into our "fall", with one day being cooler and dryer, then the next several warmer and more humid. Despite being left indoors, I want the paint to take enough time to dry comletely to avoid any tackiness issues when the masking of the center cab is
done to paint the remainder of the hood areas.

The remaining color will be BNSF Orange, close enough to the old GN Orange that I could not find in Badger Modelflex locally. The dark red primer, really a rusty red, and this BNSF Orange set each other off nicely, with the grabs and other rails also being painted with BNSF orange for "safety contrast".

I am still imaging everything as I work and will be ready to show results after next weekend.

Can't wait to see your pictures, Ron. You've put a lot of work into this project.

I was looking for an Athearn truck to put under it to make it 4 wheel drive, but the wheelbase is too short on the B trucks, and too long on the C ones. The closest is the truck for the SD40.

Yes. They're about the same length as the SD40 EMD trucks, and don't line up with the journals.
