I am painting the AHM Center Cab project at this point and had a suggestion from a modeler on MR forums regarding use of glass or mirror to more precisely cut masking tape. Well, I first considered a $ 10.00 glass cutting board at Walmart, but also found a gridlined tempered glass cutting may available at Michael's Crafts for 12.98, which I bought. I used it last night and what a difference it made in making masking tape portions for small areas! I would not advise cutting styrene on it, and will use my green plastic self-healing type mat for that stuff, but this might also be useful for decal trimming (prior to softening and applying) and for wood cutting. The issue with the plastic mat is the " give " that occurs as the knife enters the plastic surface. In the case of masking tape, it creates a pull into the cut crevice, making the clean edge you want not particularly sharp and defined. On the other hand, the plastic mat provides a place for the knife blade to " seat itself" after passing thru the styrene piece, rather than hitting a hard surface and potentially damaging the blade or the cut piece.

Perhaps this is small stuff to worry over, but if it helps out other modelers and kit bashers, then that's my point.

Besides, my daughter likes the glass mat for her arts and crafts stuff and scrapbooking activities- so there you go!

I had to ask a clerk where it was. She found it over in the scrapbooking side of the store, the aisle where they have those Crikcut cutting machines. There is another one with a trade of "Slice" that is more expensive, though.
The one I bought has a logo "EK/Success" on it. The size is about 9x12.

I meant to say " trade name" of Slice.

I initially saw that one online at the Michael's website.

Hey Ron

Thanks again, and that observation about the "pulling" of the decal material or what have you into the cut crevice was an outstanding observation

Hey SL:

Was in a Michael's north of Toronto, Canada yesterday, they had a "Slice" cutting board with grid but it was plastic. Will get one next trip to states...

Thanks again for the posting, good idea.

Well, to be honest, that Slice brand came up on the Michael's website when I searched for cutting mats, but I walked into the store not knowing if it was glass or plastic. I'm glad the clerk steered me to the other brand.

I have really found it useful as I cut the decals for the AHM Center Cab ( new postings on that Mon or Tues),
that I would have otherwise cut on an Xacto green plastic mat, as I used to do.

When I painted, it is also great for cutting masking tape materials.
