This is my LOTW:
A Varney LIL Joe Docksider with full CV valve gear. I just finished the restoration tonight. I started with this:

And I ended tonight with this:

I painted it last night after blasting the shell & frame. I baked the paint at 170 F for ~40 minutes. I used my Dremel and wire wheeled clean all the brass drive rods, drivers and everything else. It runs great now too!
That is a Lindsay TT scale docksider too.

My LOTW is a Tyco booster. I upgraded it with a Yardbird motor and Bachmann DCC decoder. I also added warm white LEDs front and back.

I can't remember what I posted last...hopefully I didn't post this before:

I picked it up at a small train show, where it was marked as a "dummy." It looked like it had been powered at one time, so I was interested. Also, I have a weak spot for D&H because that's what my first HO loco was. We don't see many of them around here. After I got it home, I opened it up and found it was a powered unit as I had thought, but the motor was disconnected and the gears removed. One can motor and a few pieces from the junk box later, and it runs. Now I just need to work on the traction tires because it spins out when I try to pull anything.

B77, is that the 4 or 8 wheel powered unit? It's a Mehano RS-11.

| It's the 4 wheel drive version. Thanks for the link...I was thinking AHM since the only mark is the ubiquitous "Yugoslavia." I've also got the BN version.

Tony's site mentions AHM, but I think he's confusing it with the GP18. There was never an AHM service sheet for it. I think it was exclusively Varney, Life-Like, then Model Power.

| Whatever it is, I intend to work on it some more. I've tried the cheap dental band tires I have, but hey don't really work...which is no surprise. I'll have to look around for something better, like some actual o-rings. I've also been looking at "bullfrog snot" which seems interesting.

My LOTW is actually a swap-out. I found a SW-7 at a local firehouse show, it had a B&O shell on it. But a few weeks ago, I'd bought a SW-7 shell because it had Coors beer logo on it. Same design, it fits the (Athearn?) chassis, has dual drive, all gears and two shorty universal joints inside. So now I can either run B&O, or the privately owned Coors engine at the brewery.

What would be even MORE fun is to pull the Tyco Schlitz billboard boxcar I just bought with it. Heh heh. That should raise a head. Oops, was that too graphic? I guess if I throw in the Blatz beer billboard boxcar, I could have a "double header"...

If you can find the small Goody hair bands at Walmart, they work well, and last a long time. I haven't seen them in stock in a while, though.

I think I already have that one somewhere. Maybe. pretty sure. I think Varney did a Coors, too, brown and yellow? Anyway, when I find my beer cars again, I'll put them together.

| OK, Guys, I thought I knew about everything concerning Tyco/Mantua steam. But today I received a nice little 0-4-0 Booster (with the cast body and nice T.Y.C.O lettering). Nothing unusual about that....EXCEPT, while cleaning it I discovered that the entire frame is PLASTIC, as is the cover over the axles, and the steam cylinders! I've never seen this--was this some experiment gone bad---even the new Mantuas have metal frames. This one is so old it still has the old Mantua hook and loop couplers. What gives here?? Like I said, the boiler itself is the heavy metal casting. The power that is normally picked up through the axles and the frame is carried instead by a contact that touches the rear axle bearing. I can see why this didn't last! Picture will be forthcoming--can anyone give me more info on this? Surely, it's a bit rare? Chris

I only ever found the small Goody hair bands in the 3-size multipacks they used to sell. But I haven't had to look in several years.
Adams, does that 0-4-0 have power pickup from one wheel on each side? If so, it IS rare... because it was a piece of crap and they quickly abandoned this design, as well they should have been beaten for even daring to release it. I have one or two of them. They run terribly. And really, with literally ONE wheel for electrical pickup on each side, why wouldn't they? It begs the question: what the heck were they thinking? Even the Powertorque wasn't that bad!

From what I understand, it was the very first version of the booster. Since the plastic frame did not meet with much success, they switched to the all metal later.

| Thanks, guys, for the info on the Booster. One side has the usual wheel contacts, picking up from both wheels, but the other side gets current through one wheel with a contact touching the rear axle bearing. I suppose you might get some residual contact through the rods from the other wheel. I do like the T.Y.C.O shell, and have another Booster coming in to use this one on. By the way, just as a useless exercise, has anyone ever tried to make a plausible railroad name out of the acronym "TYCO?"
