Frank, the technical explanation as to what was going on, that I posted, is on page one, post #30 in this thread. Probably the long one you skipped over, lol. I kinda figured after typing all that, Mr. Murphy would see to it that things get fixed
~~~~~~~~~
As for everyone's favorite newcomer: I believe the proper perspective lies somewhere between Sean and Nelson's respective takes.
Sure, it's annoying. Maddeningly so. But most of us old farts (and I say that as someone sill on the 20-side of mid-30's, ha ha) had our own phases, I'm certain. As Sean pints out, who is any one of us to judge? The better part of valor provides a guiding hand to an extent, otherwise how will someone like that ever learn? Of course there must be a willingness to learn and change and grow, too - I'm not sure that has always been the case.
But as Nelson points out, sometimes the very looseness of this forum works against it. Nobody likes rules, nobody wants to seem like a hardass, but oddly enough sometimes they do provide an environment that is more pleasant for everyone. I'm not saying Robert's Rules of Order should be invoked, but there is a precedent. I wonder if a per-day post limit wouldn't be a bad idea. But then who gets to arbitrate.... ugh.
Frankly, I think it's great that someone is interested enough to troll through every single post in over 5 years' worth of archives. But really, it's not necessary to comment on seemingly every one.
On hand I appreciate the perspective of people saying "but I like that he comments to everything because there's stuff there I didn't know about otherwise". I get it - a couple of times I found myself in a thread I was happy to read. But on the other hand... nothing is stopping you from sifting through the archives on your own. For that one thread I was happy to read, I probably wasted 20 minutes on others. Eventually it's not worth the hassle.
Personally I find it aggravating to see dozens and dozens of topics resurrected (or even current) with what amount to little more than "Me too!" or "Me wants!" or "Wow!" or "Cool!" posts. Is there anything wrong with this? Technically, no. It's harmless... a first-world problem, as it were. But does it add any worth or value to the forum? No. I mean you may as well comment to every thread and say "Moo!" or "Bark!" or "Fart!" or "FHQWGHADS!", see how quickly that gets old and useless.
Sometimes the fine art of conversation is knowing when to keep quiet.
Not going to do that. I was just using some sarcasm. I just really don't agree with what was said, or this sort of "talking about him behind his back" while the forum was down. I know it didn't have anything to do with me, it just got my attention because I actually think this forum has too few responses, good ones or bad ones.
That and I tend to post things when I've stayed up too late. Anyway, that's more than my two cents.
The way the website is being characterized is similar to my community association here in Florida, where most of us who live in subdivisions with a requirement to have to belong hate ALL the rules as being picayune, but are quick to feel offended when the new guy down the block has a giant party and both sides of the street look like on-street parking in Brooklyn. ( don't ask me how I know this, as I hail from the real Midwest, not someplace east like Cleveland!)
But seriously, if there are kibitzers on this forum who get kicks out of hacking things up, I hope they move on to more significant targets, like the (lack of equal) federal Justice Dept.
All I know is I like trains, and that's enough for me!
I won't get started on community/homeowner associations. That's why I don't live in a city. If we had an off-topic thread I'd love to get into some debates about real issues.
I like spiderj76's comments. I don't necessarily agree, but it's a more balanced view. When I read a forum like this, I can very quickly separate the good from the bad with just a few clicks. Maybe not everyone wants to or can do that--so I understand the argument about the volume of comments being too much to handle.
There were also some comments about this forum being "casual." I can't say that I agree with that either. I think for a model railroad forum it's casual, but compared to other forums I'm on it's definitely not. I used to post in another collecting forum and it was constantly active, both with "serious" discussion and with completely off-topic chatter.
I actually feel kind of uncomfortable with this whole thread. It's like talking about somebody behind their back.
Actually B77 it's not behind anyonws back, it's right here in the open.
My issue and Tony gave it a taste test is; tthat if Ian pins the tail on every donkey, it means you have to open every one to see if someone who's opinion/info you want or value is there. Tony used the term signal/noise ratio and that I think hit the right note. My take.
No pink flamingos, scratchy nylon webbed lawn chairs, old tires used for planters, overly ornate mailboxes with goofy decorations on them, those flag type banners with snoopy or another cartoon character that young parents used to place outside their front door ( real big in the 90s!), any car with a " baby on board " sign on the rear window, those adhesive sillouhettes of a family, telling the driver behind you exactly what your family consist is ( stick figures of a dad, mom, two boys, a girl, a dog, a cat etc.), ANY Obama 2008 campaign sign on a Prius or other jellybean-shaped vehicle. Heck, the list is endless..... Oh, I forgot: the bumper stickers that say " my child is an outstanding citizen at XYZ elementary school ( when the sticker is already 10 years old and junior has already been sent to the state pen for selling meth)!!!!!
But wait, there's more: those college kids in their small cars with 50 jillion stickers from obscure rock bands pasted all over their rear window, bumper and such.
I have Vet's Day off tomorrow, so as a Vet, I thank all others for THEIR service, be it in a staff office, a commissary, or in a combat unit, or wherever; we signed on the line when we were asked or volunteered- as opposed to the whiners occupying public parks today!!!!
Good night ALL!!!! (and you too, Nels!)
Yes, normally it's in the open...but this started during a time when many were "locked out" by the domain name issue. So that's not exactly out in the open. I'm not saying it's a huge deal, it's just not something I would have done.
I also agree that the signal/noise ratio is a great analogy. I just disagree with the conclusion. I have no problem sifting through noise to find a signal...in my opinion, that's just part of freedom of speech.
Hey B77:
Freedom of Speech is foundational no question.
OTOH compare posts per day levels, for any high level poster like say Ken, Nelso or I.
Freedom is not license is what I'm driving at.
lets see what the future holds shall we?
And in the mean time...
Yes, lets move forward. I would actually like to get back to being involved with this forum. But let me be clear--I still disagree with the statement "freedom is not license" especially in this context. I understand there are times when the freedom to do something is outweighed by the responsibility not to speak ( the old yelling "fire" in a crowded room scenario) but I don't think that's what we have here. Furthermore, in most any situation, I will err on the side of free speech and simply discredit--or openly laugh at--the one abusing the freedom, therefore exercising my freedom of speech in turn. Maybe I do believe freedom IS license...for everyone. This particular situation just bothers me because I don't see the harm in the "nameless" person's posts. I feel like the forum is bullying some random kid.
As far as posts per day goes...I really don't care. Do we really even need those sort of statistics? A lot of this started because people accused certain members of "increasing their post count" as if that was some sort of goal to achieve. Let's just do away with the post counts altogether. They serve no purpose.
B77;
Well I'll respect Freedom by not taking license.
I think you missed what I was conveying with that idea.
Let me put it another way;
Freedom requires responsibility.
Hope that's more clear,
Is there a way to get the IP out there for people to find it?
I probably wouldn't have found it on my own.
BTW: There was an administrator logged on the other day and I sent a PM asking if we could
I could not agree more. I know I am new here and probably do not hold any level of authority on the matter, but I find the entire topic upsetting, off-putting and sad. Enough already. The hobby is meant to be fun. This forum, as well as others, can and does for many, play an important part of the hobby. What I see here is a bunch of guys who have been so far removed from their youth that they are taking this forum way too seriously.
Lets end this string and start getting back to talking about trains. That is what drew me here and the only thing that keeps me coming back. It is certainly not to read about a bunch of old, frustrated guys griping about someone posting too many times. That is what I find bothersome.
Sorry if this offends anyone, as that is truly not my intent.
Sorry BT, I do "get it", but I just don't agree... which is OK. We do not all have to agree, but since we all have one common goal... to talk about and share our trains and see everyone elses trains, we should be willing to try to get along.
Glad to see the forum is back. I guess as someone who rarely post here and is still somewhat new, I have missed out on the "drama" or simply paid no attention to it. This is the best train forum and it has really jump started my interest in the hobby once again. people like Bryan and NPR have been really helpful, something that is lacking in those other sites where people are more interested in how much a certain piece cost, forgetting why they got into this hobby in the first place. So to me, this site is as good as it gets and have enjoyed every minute I have been here. When i was unable to get onto it on Sunday, I was a bit upset thinking I lost it. Anyhoot, glad to be back and hope to talk trains with you nice folks.
Okay youse guys- trains, trains, and nuthin' but trains. Mustang is right!
It' s the holiday season and all we should be having is visions of sugarplum Cab Forwards dancing in our heads, except for some of usnwh ALSO like diesels and everything else that has a hint of train aroma to it!
For the record, Mustang, I may be 57 but my wife tells me I act more like a young buck! ( just wish I had a few more of them bucks!!!!).
I think you missed what I was conveying with that idea.
Let me put it another way;
Okay, this is absolutely my last post on this topic. Apparently I haven't made myself clear. I UNDERSTAND WHAT YOU ARE SAYING AND I DISAGREE.
I'M NOT GOING TO AGREE NO MATTER HOW YOU EXPLAIN IT.
I DO NOT AGREE.
Thank you. I'm not even going to read this thread anymore. There's nothing more to be said. We disagree.
Hey you guys, I made the Forum for the VERY Few Model Power Fans out there, me being one, and I spent 4+ hours on that, and you cant have a forum with one Person! I Needed some people Intrested in Model Power, Their New Models are GREAT! I have an FP7 Which made me so Intrested.
quote:Sean, in the grand scheme of things it's a tempest in a teapot, but in terms of forum rules what he did, particularly trying to recruit members for his own forum once he got angry, would have earned him a quick probation or a ban elsewhere. The fact that he's 12 is no excuse, or a reason that other members should have to put up with it. I found revisiting some of the threads interesting too, because I'd forgotten about many of them, but it was lost in the tide of spam he generated.
Of course we've got bigger problems now, since the whole forum is in limbo. I hope Todd can find some peace of mind, wherever he is. |
Hey NKP, Im 13. I waited 4 years to join the forum. Ive been lurking since before I was on officialy. I passed the aged mark. And Some people enjoy going through older posts. And for the problem of "my tide of spam"-Look at the Last poster! If it is me, than it will say CNVIATyco. Just ignore it.
