The computer cache?

I'm on a Linux box it doesn't have quite the same issues Windose usually does. Everything else is normal in terms of speed.

Ken thanks for your link. I didn't know what to think. Recieved no message. Only something from the TYCO forum that came to me as a popup which all get automaticaly cancled du to spam and virus attacks. A e-mail would have worked just as well.
So what happened? Did we change servers? Did we not pay a bill? The last whatever it was refered to loss of a domian name.

....and here is the question that begs to be asked .

WHY CANT IT STAY THIS WAY ??????

Why is it that when those two "noodnicks" eventually find there way back here....Why do we have to put up with there incessant and totally useless postings ???

Cant something be done to stick a mute in them ???? ANYTHING ????

This site used to be such a great place for information concerning not just Tyco HO trains but other HO mfgs as well.... I Never heard of Varney,Penn Line,Globe,Herkimer OK... just to name a few until finding this site....and now I own some examples of all of them.

Four years ago my then 8 year old son approached me with a box of badly bruised and busted Tyco and AHM trains. I scoffed at his new found interest ...."throw them away"..."please take them out of here " were my responses...it was because of this site that I found out that people have a genuine interest in vintage HO trains.

Fast forward 4 years he is 12 now....over 130 boxed sets later (mostly tyco) countless boxed accessories and boxed individual locos and rolling stock the time we have spent together is priceless chasing this stuff at shows and meets.

Being a Postwar Lionel and MTH O gauge collector for the better part of 26 years ....The HO collecting was/is a nice cheaper diversion.

Again none of the above experiences I feel would not have been possible without this site....it really fostered a interest in these trains for me and my son...cant we try to restore it to some of its "former glory" ???

Yeah, you know what guys, I'd lock down any pending deals, and do some archiving... Nelson may be right, there's no telling how stable this forum will remain. That Home->to Domain expired thing smacks of Rube Goldberg.

I haven't heard back from Todd as yet and I don't know where I put his phone number or even if it's current. I do know he's preoccupied at present.

Hey Ken:

Yor link would include router and "subnetmask" numbers different than us in N/A. Notice how your link starts with an ip address? It may also be that the NA zone now requires ipv 6+ and the European zone may not. That would I believe cause a problem like this.

I emailed Tony to ask, he'd know I haven't done NetworkSupport in years so I'm not really up to speed. Maybe he has an answer. Sorry can't do better.

I'm more concerned that the hiccup has cause Shaygetz to decide it's time to move on. He emailed to tell me that but I haven't heard back from him.....

Hey Ken:

Not quite.

The Domain was accesible world wide, but we all take different routes to it. I think it's more somehow things were getting misrouted, than the domain expiring. Obviously it's still here.

Again we'll just have to wait on Todd.

ha ha, seems every time I consider getting "invested" here again, something happens: server goes down, I get knocked off, morons invade, BS flares up, DNS registrations expire, who knows...

...seems it honors its name as the "TycoForum" since it's about as reliable as a PT

As far as I can gather, this forum is currently running on a server that Todd has direct access and control over. This was not always the case, but has been for a while. Hence his references to troubleshooting and periodic reboots, etc.

The issue with access by the name (tycoforums.com0 versus IP (24.149.253.215) is an issue of DNS registration and expiration. All websites in the world have to register a URL to point to an IP, because humans can remember words more easily than random numbers. You can even have multiple URLs pointing to the same website - this is what large corporations do, pointing many names / spellings / etc to the same IP their site actually runs on.

To do this, you pay a registrar, who is allowed to update the master DNS hosts (think of them as "phone books") the internet runs on - which are propagated downstream to local ISPs, etc. It would seem Todd contracted GoDaddy to do this at some time; obviously the recurring fee was not paid for renewal this time. Oversight or deliberate, only Todd knows.

The upshot is now, GoDaddy is no longer under obligation to forward requests for "tycoforums.com" to the actual site, or anywhere else for that matter. So they display their own site of course.

But the server is still on, as evidenced by the fact you're reading this. Except you can only get to it be using the IP address in the URL. An IP address will *always* work provided the machine is running. Trouble is, who wants to remember an IP address?

Obviously the forum itself is still buggy. Many links within itself still point to "Tycoforums.com" and break. Others reference the IP address, and function. You can't get to this topic by clicking on the "recent topics" list on the left, for example. But you can get to it from its subforum just fine. Hip hip hooray for buggy free software!

Oddly enough, in the referrer logs on my own site I have seen entries based on both URL and IP from here for some time - this inconsistency goes way back.

So as long as the server itself is up, the forum will be here. But until GoDaddy gets paid, you won't be getting to it by "name".

Sean, why would you think it was you? We have a tween member who's spammed the forum with hundreds of garbage postings, and resurrected reams of old threads with meaningless jabber in order to increase his post count, who then became belligerent when asked not to do so, and even created his own forum and attempted to siphon off members out of spite. You, OTOH, post cool and informative stuff when you have something to add.

It makes you wonder if he's been breathing into a paper bag since the domain name expired.

No worries.. please. I was just joking! I knew it could not be me and i have a very good idea who it is. On a side. I think he is a nice kid. he is just young, but then again, isn't that something the older generation has been griping about all along... We need to get more young blood into this hobby to keep it alive?

I don't mind his ramblings I suppose. I am not so sure if it is all only to ramp up his numbers. Might be, but who knows. I guess a little of my wife's mentality rubbed off on me.. Need to learn to pick your battles. I found some of his bringing up of the old topics interesting at times because I never have enough time to spend researching the forum archives. If I didn't find it interesting or worth commenting on, I moved on. Then again, I am 41. I might have been just like him in my early 20's.

For me, I guess I think it is best to just ignore him if he looks like he is rambling.

Maybe the guy has not other friends and is just looking for some. Who knows?

Sean

* I dont know which subject I should comment here about. The Shhh--- or the Shhhhing of a annoying whatever. In the Shhh---. Does anyone notice that not many people are finding this site anymore. When you would check online users there was always a bunch of Guests signed in. Now none. Do you think they can't open the site, and they keep seeing that other information about the domain name. Right now just me, mike and 1 guest. Has our site owner been around recently? Anybody notice him? Maybe he has lost the link to.

Sean, in the grand scheme of things it's a tempest in a teapot, but in terms of forum rules what he did, particularly trying to recruit members for his own forum once he got angry, would have earned him a quick probation or a ban elsewhere. The fact that he's 12 is no excuse, or a reason that other members should have to put up with it. I found revisiting some of the threads interesting too, because I'd forgotten about many of them, but it was lost in the tide of spam he generated.

Of course we've got bigger problems now, since the whole forum is in limbo. I hope Todd can find some peace of mind, wherever he is.

This is the wisest thing ever said on here. Unfortunately, this also explains why I don't post on here anymore. "Rambling" about toy trains is forbidden. Only serious discourse about serious issues related to the important world of scale modeling is allowed.

Obviously, since I am replying, I still lurk here. I like to see the LOTW and COTW that everyone shows. I like to read about how people work on the models they have. Don't worry, though, I try not to comment. I don't want to dirty the place up with unnecessary comments and random discussion.

I know that none of this conversation has anything to do with me, but I know who it is referring to. I've seen his posts, and I see nothing wrong with them. It's a kid(I think) who talks a lot....so what. That's a good thing. That's what discussion forums are for.

Now excuse me, and I apologize for the space this took up. I'm going to sell all my TYCO and Athearn locomotives so I can buy one really sweet brass model. Then, if I post some pictures of it and brush up on the history of high-end HO scale model railroad equipment, maybe I'll be good enough to comment on here. But I doubt it.

I really wish there was a forum where average guys could talk about the simple HO scale trains they grew up with. Maybe a forum devoted to TYCO or something, where anyone could post all they wanted without judgment. Anyone know one like that?

B77, no one can be accused of being less serious here than yours truly, unless I'm talking tech, and I don't own a single brass loco. Most of mine are inexpensive fixer-uppers. But forums, even ones as loose as this one, need basic guidelines, or you end up with anarchy. The issue isn't a lack of seriousness, or youth, it's one of spam level posting that was causing problems for a lot of members. To his credit, CNVT had improved somewhat from the way he started out.

You're free to do whatever you want, of course, like sell your collection and leave, but that seems like a highly dramatic, self-pitying overreaction to a relatively minor blip on the radar here that has nothing to do with you. If you do go, good luck finding a place as casual as TCF.

Got to think about, this is a rather nice and peaceful serenity! No more off topic, or stupid random posts! I came here to learn more 'bout tyco after recieving some around 2005.

Seriously?

Nothing wrong with the occasional off topic post btw... sometimes the best thinking is done in a lateral or analogous tangent. (See my signature!)

Was the outage of the website a valid circumstance of a bill not being paid, as it seemed to be when I could not log on recently for several days, or something more sinister, as in a hack being perpetrated by a user?

If it was the latter, that is symptomatic of the lack of moral integrity of many younger internet users these days, who feel they can lash out at whatever and whomever they want to, just because they are upset....

Sometimes, I'm glad most of us are rational thinking mature adults, although there are a few...

At any rate, glad things are back to normal.

See Tony's explanation above. If thats not enough, time to start learning about TCP/IP and computer networking.
I'm sure not going to tutor in it.
