Anybody own a Penn Line steam engine? Do they run and pull good? I've been told they pull marvelousy! I'm in the process of bidding on a PRR 2-8-0 on eBay.

* For myself, I can say I like them. They ran smooth and are good pullers.

This is my Penn Line Decapod. A real great puller. But it needs 100% exact lying track! Otherwise it derails!
The other thing is that this engines are mostly kit built! Mine was so bad built that it could not move! Took me some time to get a fine runner/puller! But if every thing is ok you will be surprised! - Erich

COOL! According to the seller, he believes a trailing truck is missing! He did manage to bench test run it since the tender wire and draw bar are dissconnected from it. Said it ran fine after a lube and a little cleaning. Its a H-9 consolidation.

I bought a 2-8-0 some few years ago on eBay because it looked sharp in the photo.
The seller did not know what it was, and neither did I; it is a Penn Line H-9 built with a lot of detail.

The centers of the driver wheels were very poorly cast and tough as nails; after trying a file with no success, I put them to a bench grinder; that did the trick. (a second one I got had good castings).

The motor was not strong enough to get itself around a curve; and then the armature fried.

Later I bought another one that was missing a lot of pieces, but had a motor; from the two I have one heavy machine with a classy Pennsy look. It needs to be fitted with a modern can motor; if I run it for half an hour it seems fairly hot.

Like Tyco diecast, there is a simple worm gear drive, but the worm gear is about double diameter of what Tyco/Mantua uses. It does not run as fast as a Mantua 2-8-2 nor as slow as an MDC compound geared loco. IMHO, it would benefit from compound gearing (except for the noise).

It has brass rims on the drivers and pulls on par with my lighter plastic shelled 4 axle drive diesels on flat nickle-silver track. (no layout yet, I only have sectional track on the rug). De-railment has not been a problem even with my crummy track.

Two would look great double heading 40 box cars; I want another one!

I am looking for a photo of PENN LINE set 5701. I think that the first two numbers 57 means it was released in 1957. Can anyone list what was in this set. I see it was a Witcome diesel set..

This is the WHitcomb I was referring to. Nice to know there is a model of this one, even if it is over $200.

Well Penn Liners! I was looking through apile of some stuff and found a Penn Line set box for #5701. So I tarted to put the set back together, fixing the box and looking for all the trains to put in it. I found a perfect Whitcomb Midget . I also found a ramp. Then a choice of boxcars. The set picture has a Union Pacific boxcar of which I 5 or 6 to pick from. I cant find my flat cars with the trailers. I have both Trailer-Maid and Hinde & Dauch but cant find them. Recient photos say they exist. Where I dont know!. This saturday Nov 4 is the New York Society of Model engineers train show in Carlstad at ST Joe's. Set info speaks of a Ford tilt cab tractor of which I am sure I don't have one. I do have 4 or 5 collector matchbox tractors and trailers. the tractor fits, but the trailers are too long.
I 'll waite to panic till after this Saturdays train show. Maybe I'll get luckey at the show.

Here is Penn-Lime set 5701 as it id now. Dont know which boxcar I'll put with the set, I have 3 to choose from. The 2 flats with trailers are Ulrich not Penn Line. I am still looking for my correct ones.

This one was included in a large ebay lot I bought several years ago. I think the motor turns but I never did get it running, it's missing a pin that holds the valve gear. Nice looking unit though.

A shame a lousy little pin has her sidelined. What a beauty.

Random photos from the layout today.
