It is rather odd. I've also noticed that Bachmann has announced new locos (Alco 2-6-0, Alco S4) with DCC and sound that are priced much less. Micromark has the Alco S4 with DCC and sound listed for $99.
So I don't know why some locos in their line are so expensive and yet they can introduce new ones for much less.

Ken, I think this is a great topic! And yes, I've noticed the dramatic price increase in the Spectrum range too.
I'm still a bit skeptical. I understand that the Spectrum line has more detail than the blue box line, but I'm not sure why the price differential is so high. Of course, I know that the level of detail is important for many and the price is less so.
At least for me, seeing the upcoming 2-6-0 in the blue box line with DCC and sound that is around the $100 range (at online stores) makes me wonder why those Spectrum locos are so much more. Same factory, I think. Just wish I had more info as to why. Is it just marketing? I have both recently made Spectrum and standard locos, and darn if I can tell the difference in quality or whatever. BTW, I'm very happy with both the standard and Spectrum locos that I have.
I look forward to reading more of your thoughts on this.
Cheers, Thomas

hi thomas must admit the spectrums have a lot more metal detail,ie the boiler, chains etc,but the so called blue box stuff is better for value,if you are happy with more plastic, and you get the bonus of dcc and sound for less, its swings and roundabouts,304 over here for the dcc version of the southern, which i have decided against, due to having to many dc locos, ken
