Jumping in quickly this early Sunday morning, I"m gonna start off this week's LOTW with a double-header. Not one, but TWO Krauss-Maffei ML 4000 diesel hydraulics by AHM, in TWO different roadnames ( the only two that existed, anyway). In reality, I think that they were upgraded to 6000 hp, but these were listed on Ebay as ML 4000 version, so I"m not quite sure which is correct. Anyway, these two were just acquired thru auction buy, 9 engine lot, these two are dummies, but I had bought a custom-painted K-M at a show last year, so I can use that chassis to run either of these now. Luckily the auction didn't list these by model type, only roadnames, so it cut down on the bidders, K-M's seem to generate high bids, other powered units are selling in the 50-100 range lately. Yikes. So I"m lucky to have gotten my engine lot for 48 bucks. Well, here they are :

I like different, and these babies are as different from normal engines that you'll find hauling freight on the rails anywhere. I'm pleased to have gotten this pair as I did.

Thanks guys...Ken, the weakness is in the gear box, the clips on the box would break, allowing it to pop apart inside. Irv apparently dumped some serious coin into these, only to have them fail miserably. He gave up on all steam in '65.
Gareth, this would be among the first ones offered in 1961. They were originally to be Hi-F and were introduced in 1958, but bugs in the drive had to be worked out, eventually leading to a geared drive in '61. None of the Hi-Fs were ever sold but a couple did walk out of the factory.
These had plastic drivers, all the power being picked up through the tender...

And yes, the B&M prototype is correct, though many wonder to this day why Irv went this route instead of a more common USRA 4-6-2. Apparently, steam models lost a bundle for Irv, it took awhile for him to get back o his feet.

Another Geep for my collection. Won this one for $ 7.00 on ebay complete with original box. Looks great and runs great after some maintenance.

Hey Shay:
There has bee a fair bit of debate recently on another list about whether any Hi-F versions ever made it into production. Consensus seems to be no.

I have been searching Ebay every day for this Electric and then one day I found it on a BIN for a reasonable price. The last one I saw sell on Ebay went for $170.
I need only one or two more road names and I will have every variation of the IHC GG1 Double Motor Electrics.

Love that NYC GG1, AF Kid BUT did NYC ever have that scheme? Does your GG1 collection include Tyco's version?

microbusss- Tyco GG1 just one, a plain Tuscan. I think the Tyco gg1's are ugly and unrealistic.
The hardest IHC Double motor GG1 to find is a Virginian. I have only seen two of them and I own them both.

Those are actually pretty cool, AF Kid. Some interesting "what-ifs?" The IHC guy who had Mehano paint them in those schemes was telling me how in demand they are.

SG, that would be the second production version (not counting the pre-production RB drive, of course). The first version still had the large steel axles for the RB drive with teeth cut into the rearmost axle driven by a worm on the motor shaft, and no whitewalls (that's the one I have). The third version was upgraded with metal drivers and loco pickup. According to the guys on the Vintage HO forum a while back, no one has ever seen a pre-production RB drive.

Hey Sean:
They are teriffic are they not. Virtually nothing will out pull them. I have one as well with the Vandy tender. Need to get a replacement, somehow a Vndy just doesn't seem right...
I also have one of the Super Mikado's leaving me a Super Pacific to get... There are some claim Other Super units and the only reason I believe it is Jim Heckard said so. Thats pretty close to gospel for me.

An NYC GG1? Well I never! Also hydraulics = awesome.
Mehano Plymouth MDT for IHC in Pennsy silver. This modest little loco is not without faults; too fast, too low and being two wheel drive, not inclined for inclines. That aside, it's still a favourite and a classic that no Tyko roster should be without. Catch it if you can!
